Solar Observation report 12/3/12

Well I have had the Solarmax 60 for nearly a week now and have pretty much got the hang of it.

Solar Report March 12 2012
Weather fine and clear 24deg C. Seeing fairly steady.

After setup I managed to use the tuner to get different views of the various items of interest on the Sun. The main item is the remains of AR 11249 which is approaching the East limb of the disc. One very prominent spot is claer at all tuning positions. With careful tuning and using a 7mm Nag giving 57x at least 2 other spots come into view and a penumbra (I thinks that's the correct term!) come into view. On the largest spot the penumbra is easily 3 times the diameter of the dark spot itself.

Down on the North West limb there is a new active region forming and it is fairly faint at the moment. Near the North pole a prominent S shaped line is clearly visible.

When tuning for prominences, a group sits near the South pole. The eastern one is a faint loop, the middle one is a large bright triangular shape that appears to be detaching itself. On the west is a small bright bump which may ba a new prom starting to form.

Anyways thats what I have seen today!

Nice report Malcolm. I reckon that scope might be worn out by the time you head off for the Transit.
