Ic 2944

Last night was the first time I'd photographed this nebula. Didn't think it looked much like a chicken until I realised there's so much more to it outside my field of view. I guess I'd need a focal length of about 400mm to get it all in on my Canon 550d.

I shot this through Bortle 6 skies using a CLS ccd filter on the modded DSLR.
My intervalometer broke so I was restricted to using the camera's native 30sec exposure. No need for guiding at least but I did manually dither to reduce some of the noise. The stars are a tad soft because I ran this one through without rechecking the focus. I think I may add some RGB to this another time as it looks more like a duotone. A little too saturated maybe? 37x30secs @3200iso, Esprit 100.

Yeah a bit too saturated. It's hard to pick when to stop and the images look different on different screens and even from different angles.

So true Tony, although it did look a bit rich on my computer too. I don't know what came over me to think this wasn't too red, I apologise. Here's one I desaturated on my phone photo editing app. I think I'll just create a luminence layer out of this and add some UVIR cut filtered shots to show star colour.

I tried this one myself recently but it was too warm and seeing was really average and I didn’t feel like spending hours trying to extract anything out of it. I can never see the Chicken in it either.
Well done for getting what you got and persevering despite your inervelometer dying. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

No, I don't mind a bit, I can see the chicken now as long as you've orientated your image to have it lying on it's back with it's feet in the air! Still can't see why they call it ' Running' looks more like it's just standing to me.

I realised after I'd looked at other shots people had taken of this nebula, that I'd only captured the chook's body. I wonder if it's stuffed? If it wasn't, I certainly stuffed it now!

I just captured this one myself the other night for the first time as well so, it's good to have a reference. Although looking at my subs I don't think I'll have anywhere near the amount of Ha you've captured. Nice work Mick. I don't see a running chicken either... maybe a jumping chicken.
