Afocal comparison for toucam

These two beasties are under way: On the left is a Williams Optics "universal digiscoping adapter" sourced from Frontier Optics. On the right is a Eyepiece Projection Adapter from Telescopes and Astronomy in SA.
http://www.william-optics.com/wowebs...frontviewm.jpghttp://www.telescopes-astronomy.com....on_adaptor.jpg

Background:
In theory, both have different setups for similiar results ( to be tested ).
The WO (Williams Optics) adapter attaches to the eyepiece and then the toucam is attached thru the tripod mount to the platform. The toucam is then aligned with the eyepiece. The lens of the toucam is not removed in this configuration.
The TA (Telescopes and Astronomy) adapter requires you to remove the toucam lens, screw in a t thread adapter http://www.telescopes-astronomy.com....d_adapter1.jpginto the toucam, place an eyepiece that will fit inside the Eyepiece projection adapter and then screw this to the toucam and t thread adapter.

Initial costs are for the WO adapter: $69 + $10 freight = $79, and for the TA adapter: $45 for eyepiece projection adapter + $45 for t thread adapter + $10 freight = $100.

Asimov has already suggested weight is one variable to compare. Any other factors that anyone would like tested?

Hopefully erverything arrives mid next week for the shootout!

By comparison, the 2 setups use different optical magnifications. ie: The WO adapter requires no removal of the lens of the camera...which is apparently the same as a 6mm EP....but if you couple this with another EP, what does that do to the configuration/magnification?

The TA adapter sounds like its limited to the diametre of your EP ie: will your 40mm 2" EP fit in this adapter?

Asimov, that was my worry initially that taking out the lens of the toucam, putting other eyepieces in the way, would give me at least 200x or more depending on the eyepiece. A long phonecall with Matt at Telescopes and Astronomy yielded that this is not the case. I asked him very simply "if the lens of the toucam is off and i set it up with the eyepiece projection, will my laptop see the same image as my eye would see thru the eyepiece?"

He said yes. There may be some small differences, but no magnification differences.

I will know by weds ish, if Matt is wrong, then I will send back to him

I do not believe my 40mm will fit, it is too long.

Ok, now we have three to test

http://www.astro-optical.com.au/images/digitlrg.jpg

if this http://www.telescopes-astronomy.com....d_adapter1.jpg fits this, then as long as 1.25" eyepieces are all similiar with the little step, then it might be a goer.

has anyone tried this set up with a toucam???

I made something similar to that awhile ago on the lathe. Was ok till I found out the DSLR lens tries to retract after a given amount of time...Only a couple of hrs work down the drain.

Fair enough. If your only planning on spinning small stuff up the one in the pic would be sufficient.
