Unfortunately it doesn't look like we get a total eclipse in the foreseeable future.. best we can hope for (without travelling O/S) is an annular in 2008 and 2009

There's a total in Cairns and NQ in 2012 November 14 about an hour after sunrise. That's foreseeable.

Let's start the official IIS 2012 expedition thread now (anyone going to India/China in 2009 for the longest duration eclipse of this century?).

The 2028 one in Sydney is interesting, not just because I hope to observe it from the frontyard, but just how close the prediction will be. It assumes a certain Delta-T for 2028 (90 seconds), but Delta-T has hardly moved in the last decade at around 64 seconds.

It looks like Point Robert (2037 and '38) will be in for a tourism boom, with Yantabulla ('28 & '30), Chinchilla ('30 & '37), Nonning ('30 & '38), Bedourie & Betoota ('28 & '37) and Onslow ('23 maybe & '38) all getting lucky.

Becuase it's only an hour after sunrise, you might want to think about getting out to one of the islands off Cairns (Fitzroy Is.). The Sun will be a fraction higher in the sky and if you were on Fitzroy then you could get up to a high point like the lighthouse and watch the Moon's shadow racing across the water!

The one I'm really hanging out for is the 2028 eclipse. It is happening in July of that year and the length of totality is just over 5 minutes . As per the map (cool map Vermin!) that eclipse passes through the Kimberly region and because it is in July you can bet on clear skies and dry outback roads. So watch the eclipse then tootle off to see Wolfe Creek Crater.

The path of totality in 2012 passes right through the centre on Cairns. Wow, the best place to have any sort of celebration, right on the "beachfront" Remember Ceduna 2002?
Well the bad news is that we were in Cairns last year and given the position of the sun at totality - 13 degrees above the horizon and at 105 degrees ,there is a large hill -an aboriginal reserve directly in the path! Someone should check the position of the sun on November 13th this year at the same time just to be sure but the fabulous beachfront of Cairns will not be the place to be. Maybe Port Douglas or inland. Anyone planning major events for the city will need to do some serious calculations before too long. Not sure where we will go but Cairns could be the biggest disappointment ever especially if there is no cloud.:eyep op:

The last time I checked the 2012 one started in Arnhem Land (travel permits needed) -there went the dreams of standing in Kakadu watching it at sunrise! Qld's the easiest option.

I'm taking a group to Shanghai for 2009 -- it was going to be Iwo Jima but politics intervened. We're also chartering a plane into Mangaia for 2010.

Wow, that sounds wonderful Steve!!

Quite a few of us in Townsville Astronomy Group will be heading up north for the 2012 eclipse .... a few hours up the road

May be able to meet up with a few of yous IISpacers ..... should be great, though the weather is always going to be a big worry. Cairns general area gets a lot of rain have to have a few alternate plans perhaps.... a couple of hours south of Cairns if weather looking dodgy.
