Thumbs up A used Canon 5D coming my way

Just won an auction on ebay.

$560 for a second hand 5D. It's primarily for my wife to start learning DSLR photography but I'm sure she won't mind me borrowing it from time to time

H, I remember you saying how good these are for people photography?

Have you got a nifty 50? I have a 5D and it is magic with that lens. Perfect for street photography.

I agree with Michael, the nifty 50 is a great little lens for the $'s.
You'll be very happy with the 5D Mike, awesome camera for portraits.
I still use it and I love using the nifty with it, got it at JB for less than $100.

Congratulations, Mike! That's a great price, too.

The only thing it lacks is Live View. Otherwise, bung on that 85mm you're going to buy and fall in love. And, the focus system is archaic in comparison to the Mark III. But, if you're shooting static portraits, focus/recompose with the central AF will get you there each time, provided you're not shooting at silly apertures where your depth of field is only a few centimetres.

The images straight as they appear in DPP with their gorgeous creamy tones, will blow you away.

I've got a model test on tomorrow morning. When I'm not shooting the Profoto gear, I'll be heading over to a window, pulling out that combination, and going to have a ball. The images mightn't make it into her portfolio, but, they will mine.

Look forward to seeing your first shots with this vintage masterpiece.

H

What a great price for a full frame camera. We tend to get a bit gear obssessed with newest and latest but after the initial excitement of the various features of newest gear the final image is the last word.

By the way Canon has officially discontinued the 5D mark 11. So if someone wanted a new one they will still be around for a little bit until stocks are all gone.

I also see 5D mark 111s are down to about $2600 - $2700 on Ebay now. So are Nikon D800's.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure how much my wife will let me play with it (she considers it hers already) but I'm certainly looking forward to giving it a run

I'm very happy with the price - and best of all, it's a local pickup and it turns out I know the person who's selling it (the wife of a friend of my brothers). Small world!

I've got an 85mm 1.8 on loan from a generous IIS member so can't wait to give it a try later today when I pick up the 5D.

PS: Still on the lookout for a second 5D Mk 2 so I've got 2 FF cameras when out shooting nightscapes

Nice one Mike, they certainly are a top camera, and that was a pretty decent price you picked it up for, well done, you will love it, if you ever get your hands on it.

How about a 5D3? They are down to $2600 on Ebay now. I'd like to see some more 5D3 nightscapes. Or perhaps a 6D? Similar price to a 5D2.

Wow the Canon 6D looks really really good.

They seem to be going for around $1900-$2000 body only. A used 5D Mk 2 is going for around $1400.

I could sell my 40D for ~$400 but it still means out of pocket $1600...

Very tempting.

I think 6D is the way to go Mike. You've been getting exceptional images with your 5D2 no doubt about it. But you're pegged to ISO3200. ISO6400 is useable on most of these latest cameras from Canon, Nikon and Fuji. ISO12600 perhaps with 5D3 and 6D (in jpeg at least). The Canon jpeg engine seems to be very well optimised for noise control at high ISO. That's the advantage of the much faster Digic V+ processor. Its something like 32X faster than Digic 4.

Greg.
