Winch for slide off roof

I tried this 12v winch (see attached) and it works OK.

Trouble is it's so noisy it would wake up neighbours a block away.

So essentially useless.

Any ideas?

Maybe you can replace DC motor with AC 240V, provided you can keep gearbox?
Or use manual winch?
BTW, now you gave me an idea for my ROR! (using nylon tape) I can even try to attach DC motor (from hand drill)

Hi Peter
I have two of those winches and they certainly make a racket.
My neighbour is about 400 mts away and they say it does not worry them..however my solution was to open around Sunset and cover the scope etc when finished with its plastic cover and haul the roof back in daylight.
I have a manual block and tackle unit going into play so I can close it late at night if I have to...

Great to be of assistance BJ.

Yoh Alex. Good idea, thought about that as well.
Whilst I've got your attention, have a look down in deep space.

If not for you, it would never have happened...

I have seen your image and it is indeed wonderful .....well done.

If I have helped in some small way that makes me very happy.

Close call with death..near stepped on a large brown snake (5 to 6 ft) when I got out to open my gate..only noticed it on the way back..it was looking straight at me... so climbed in the passenger side and used my walking stick to close the driver door and put up the window..would have stepped within a foot of it so very very lucky as at my age a bite would kill me.

Buying the ride on mower Wednesday to cut the now four foot high grass around the van....

I will put both winches in sound proof boxes see if that fixes things..else will have to buy out the neighbour.

Found a solution

This motor gearbox will run quietly at the right speed with 12VDC.

It can take 40V DC but that would run to fast.

It is used as a door motor in KONE elevators.

Easily available at a cost of about $100USD.

Also has an encoder (which I won't use).

It so happens, I had one in my garage all along, buried deep.
I used to be a lift mechanic :-)

Peter,
That looks like an ideal solution using a continuous cable to open and close the roof.
If you need detail just let me know.
