M42 - Duo Oiii/Ha QHY9 - FSQ106N - 2h

17x60s for the core - 1.6h for the nebulosity

Will likely shoot a lot more sub this week-end if clear to get a better blend, increase contrast and lower the noise.

1:1 here [4686x3509 - 5.12MB]
HD here [1920x1438 - 869KB]

In the meantime it's not too shabby.

Not too shabby at all. Nice one Marc!

Surprised the core is still a tad burned out and, overall, it's screaming out for some contrast enhancement

Thanks Marcus. Yeah the 60s subs I did still managed to burn the core so I'll have to redo that as well and the outer surface burnt on the 5min subs is too big too so there's no overlap For the periphery I don't have enough SNR to push it yet so it's washed out. I hope to put maybe 3 or 4h on this Saturday night. Then I'll be cooking. Although the seeing forecast is not too good. Will see.

The bones of the data are excellent.

The vast dynamic range of M42 is however hard to tame. Think Ansell Adams a little dodging and burning can make a landscape come alive.

Yep, that's the plan for tonight. Get 4h on it with exposure times in between so I can get a nice blend.

Hi Marc

I was wondering what are the advantages of a Duo filter, or why have you chosen to use one?

I assumed that gaining O3 and Ha separately was the norm.

And do you map to colour later on?

Good data by the way.

Thanks Peter. These days between weather, work and family commitments I have very limited opportunities to image from home. Colour is near impossible for me. So I try to avoid as much as possible anything in the visual spectrum. I did a lot of Ha and Oiii but the duo band gives me both in one go. For sure it's boadband but I still can get something to treat as a lum should I choose to do a quick run of Oiii or Ha later on or even blues or greens which might fit in the 30nm band pass of the filter.
