Get rid of my spotting Scope

Hi, just purchased a 10 inch Newtonian -- was told it was a 12 inch but measured it at home and took out the Mirror in order to clean it.

The Spotting Scope is home made, and focus is achieved by sliding one cardboard tube down the other Cardboard Tube.

So I am thinking of getting Rid of it, and Putting on the Celestron LT 70 that I purchased at the tip shop for only $2, as my spotter Scope.

The Celestron is tube only, with a Star Diagonal, but also has
a working red Dot finder.

I do think that spotter was mad by Screwing of th front of a Pair of 7X50 binoculars -- or something near that size, and then glueing it onto a Cardboard tube of paper towel or similar [was painted,] and putting the eyepiece of this Binoculars into a smaller tube of Cardboard, and wrapping some more cardboard around it to make it fit.

So thinking of Discarding that Spotter Scope.

Could just see the Craters of the moon through it around dust last night. And could see that Jupiter showed a distinct disk -- Assuming that it is Jupiter near Scorpio. Only other planet it can be is Saturn.

Was being Eaten by the Mossies, so did not stay till sky was dark enough to see the moons of Jupiter.

I will look and see if I have a finder scope when I get back to Sydney ...I gave some things away recently so I am not sure if there are any left but if there is one left you are welcome to it.

So will that LT70 Celestron be too big as a Spotter Scope -- have no Eyepieces as yet ?? The homemade spotter has a focal length of around 10 inches, so do think it is not worth keeping that Cardboard spotter Scope.

think it will not be hard to mount that Celestron LT 70. Saw a base it will slide into on E-bay for under $10 from China.

Existing Spotter is on an adjustable homemade frame. And think that base from China would bolt to it.This is similar to the one I found for under $10. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50mm-Tel...cAAOSwtbBbYdGh

I have told them the 4-5 days I am available next week if they do need me in Comms at Casino Fire Control Centre -- I drive my daughter to TAFE at Kingscliff a few days a week.

That offer of a Spotter is thoughtful and is appreciated.

You could get by with something akin to a rifle site perhaps without going to too much trouble do something simple..two sticks will do it but wait a couple of days and let's see if I can solve the problem...maybe I can find you an eye piece to get you started as well.
But for now point it up at the Milky Way and see what you may find..you will probably see some globulars...And try the Moon as you can determine how good you have focus.
What have you done for a mount?

Hope the fires missed you -- Tabulum fires were on the news, but was out of th room, so did not see the TV screen.

Have not started on the mount yet. but taken the half mount off the tube, and need to yet make a base for it.

As far as spotter, what is wrong with mounting my 70mm Celestron with a red dot finder on to that ten inch.

Chasing feed back on that plan.

The red dot should be enough..but try it..don't make a bracket just tape it on and decide if it is viable.

As to fires...how we did not lose the old house that I used to live in ( on another property about 20 old away from where my van is set) I just don't know..you would call it a miracle but as I don't believe in such things I call it good luck...first the fire passed it, then a lady who I let live there from time to time tried to save it but was forced to leave, they ran into some fire fighters who were drinking beer and having a rest who said they would no go..they guy with her gave them a serve and left..when they went back the house was still there and clearly those guys drinking beer decided to save the house...

What materials do you have, sheets of ply? Any 2 X 4 ? Any pine...I can do it with some iron bark saplings if that's all you have.
Let me know.

Good to hear that the fires did miss you.

Decided to join the Men's shed in order to make the Dobson base. And one man said he will teach me to use a Metal Work Lath that the Men's shed has. Hope to make an equatorial mount down the track. Yes I have a bit of scrap wood, don't know what at moment.

We had that store in an old plywood caravan until a few years back when my son decided to burn the paddock, and burnt our old van. But we pulled much burning wood out of it.

Do have a big Forrest Red Gum that fell down, so will have to cut it up, once I find the muffler of the chainsaw -- my son gave me the saw, but sadly lost the bolts to the muffler. But saw is not that big, a 56cc [I did a chainsaw course at Tafe years ago.]

I advertised on Gumtree, and two different people are sending me Eyepieces for the "Astronomy in the Bible" program.

Have watched DVDs on cleaning the mirrors, and plan on doing that very soon.

Alex,

Change my mind, I THINK Going to keep that homemade cardboard one. I put some duct tape around where it does focus -- it was too loose, and it is now tight.

Hi, Alex.

I advertised on Gumtree, saying that I did need eyepieces for an “Astronomy in the Bible” outreach. I have just received some interesting Eyepieces, from one man.

1. “Celestron 2X power doubling lens” [barlow ??]

2. Plossl 25mm Multi-Coated.

3. Possl 20mm Fully Coated “Sirius” brand.

4. Super Possl 12.5 mm Multi-Coated “Australian Geographic” [barrel appears to be carbon fibre. It is not metal lik the others.]

5. Possl 10mm Multi-Coated

6. Post 6.3mm Multi-Coated

7. Possl 4mm Fully-Coated

This is a great gift. When I arrived home, could see the pointers to the cross in the sky above the trees, so got that Celestron 70LT that cost me only $2 at the tip shop [currently on a very shaky camera Tripod], in order to go up to the gate for better views, so I could tryout these lenses. But in that short time, ˝ an hour at a guess, it had severely clouded over, so have not had a look yet.

Know that Alpha Centuri is a Double Star that I had seen in my Tasco 76mm back in the 1970s [swapped that Tasco in the 1970s for a motor drive for my OM1 SLR – wish I had not but did swap], so was going to look at Alpha Centuri as well as looking at the Jewel Box in Crux [Southern Cross] in order to check out those lenses.

Mirror has been taken out of the 10 inch Newtonian, and still have to make it base, so that I cannot us that as yet.

Another man sent me two eyepieces.

1. A 10 mm series 500 Possl.
2. GSO 15mm with a wide view of 60 Degrees. It is marked 4 element.

I have both mirrors out and both do need re-coating badly.

Joined the men's shed where I will make a Dobson base. It already has the box made.
