Be Prepared I always say...
Testing is a continuous process, it also keeps the material fresh, couldn't have it going off now could we ?

If you downed a couple of bottles of scotch you couldn't even find your wrists ..

The cities would be the main targets. Move about 200km inland.
Or you can hope for the best with duck and cover while listening to Gary Moore's Nuclear Attack.

Theres websites where you can play around and simulate the effects of various nuclear explosions across a map, such as this one

One thing that suprises me about the simulation is the area of effect for 3rd degree burns - on the simulation I linked it is almost 25km radius for 3rd degree burns.

Fallout depends on height of the explosion, detonate close to the ground to maximise fallout, but then you lose the air blast radius.

So I think the thing to do would be to find a place where you won't be cooked by the heat, and which is as structurally sound as possible to withstand the air blast. Beyond that muster up your Mad Max education to survive

Third wave was the target level of nuclear capacity. That's the theory that waves one and two would be destroyed mostly or completely.
So having enough missile to enable three waves of attack on a target was what usa and Russia relied on. Overkill somewhat.
Until usa realised that Russia had no detection radar over the pole as it had been sold off by the incumbent army in siberia for vodka and women.
Most of the minutemen silos in usa are now survival shelters and empty.
Britain keeps a trident submarine off Murmansk to keep Russia in check.
A nuclear war is likely to be a 100 percent extinction event and that's probably what happened to Venus as far as I'm concerned.
Radiation would not kill all of us. But nuclear winter would.

I have thought of putting in a bomb shelter up North not for bombs but for a place to hide in the case of bush fire firstly and maybe the ultimate storm.
However having nearly been trapped in one bush fire the idea of burying a shipping container seems appealing.
It would not cost all that much I expect.

Underground bunkers won't help you in a bushfire Alex. Unless you have some way of keeping the smoke out and some fresh air to breathe. A few years ago in Victoria people hid in bunkers during a bushfire and they all died of smoke inhalation.
