Dragonfly-ish Twin RASA Setup

Hi Folks,

Here is an interesting youtube video of I suppose a Dragonfly type multiple telescope setup using two Celestron RASA 8 Telescopes on an EQ8. The video explains that it is designed for parallel data collection (Like the Dragonfly) as well as a splayed arrangement to facilitate faster mosaics.

I'm not sure if he's a member here, his name is Steve Morris. (Cheers for the video Steve)

I too have been on the job (for too long) with something similar with multiple fast 600 & 400mm lenses... one day.

Best

Conceptually rather good fun and visually spectacular. A well executed idea.

TIP. For meridian flips to work well, both tubes need to be either parallel or canted equally in opposite directions and the guide scope centered on the overlapping area.

A point of interest is that the RASA11 has double(ish) the light gathering and a has slightly wider fov than the RASA8 when matched with an appropriate camera (FF rather than APS/C), so can pretty much achieve the same result with a couple of image runs over the same duration.

Much less fun that way though, and TBH, I think tackling engineering challenges during the day are far more enjoyable that watching a telescope doing an imaging run in a dark field

Unfortunately in further videos he had no end of issues, mainly from the mount and his replacement mount.

Yes I did see one video after that where I think he had guiding issues due to unfamiliarity with the EQ8 whilst he was waiting on a new CGX (or something?) with which he was more familiar.

Unfortunately his CGX had an electrical issue with the main board
