Saxon 20x80 bins

Bought a pair of Saxon 20 x 80 bins as a xmas pres to me.
Last night I had a brief opportunity to use them.
I was astounded by the clarity and sharpness of the image.
For the price they are very good.
They do need a tripod though as they are quite heavy for skinny muscles

Do a test?

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for the update!

Could you please shine a flashlight about 6 inches away from the eyepiece end and see the diameter of the circle projected onto the wall from the objective end?

The reason is that the 80mm binoculars range tends to be constructed and stopped down to around 70mm to improve chromatic and spherical aberrations.

Thanks.

Kind regards,

Bill

Bigger than it should be....

Hi Jennifer,

Many thanks for the excellent photo and Happy New Year!

As the aperture is 80mm, the circle should not be greater than 80mm.

That means 6 inches away from eyepiece with the flashlight but the objective lens being close to the wall, so there's no enlargement from the projection of the image.

The reason is my 80mm Gerber De Luxe binos from Japan (I think circa 1970-80s?) is stopped down from 80mm to 70mm to reduce chromatic and spherical abberations.

I am keen to learn whether the Saxon 80mm binos made now are also stopped down?

Thanks.

Kind regards,

Bill

Looking into the lens, it's all clear glass to the edges
