M83, Pinwheel Galaxy

M83, Pinwheel Galaxy

7 by 300 sec, Darks, Flats, Bias
ASI 2600 MC plus ZWO Duoband filter
Esprit 120 @F7

Bortle 9 sky from Glebe

Processed in PixInsight

I took some flats, so not sure why the image is not completely corrected as I can still see a dust bunny?

Could only take 7 lights as the clouds rolled in. Also I don't think that a duo band filter is the best tool for galaxies, but in Bortle 9 what can you do?

Cropped as even at F7 it is quite small.

The shooting environment. If you look on the right I had the pleasure of a park disco, plenty of flashing lights but good music

I think it looks great. It accentuates the Ha regions while still showing some structure in the spiral arms. I always wondered how shooting galaxies with a duo band from LP affected skies would look like. Now I know. I'm in!

That’s a really nice image of M83 considering your Bortle 9 location and flashing lights etc...
Spiral arms are really defined but there is a definite green cast which the Duoband filter is responsible for
I’ve tried imaging galaxies with my Duoband filter but can never expose or balance the RGB colour correctly , there always a green cast
Great effort just the same
Well done !!

Nice image Paul.
5mins exposure in a bortel 9 is crazy. I’ll be lucky if I can do 3mins in a bortel 5-6 and not be over exposed.
Interesting reading the effects the ZWO duoband filter has on galaxies! I was really looking forward to getting one of these to improve my imaging on galaxies in a bottle 5-6 area on my DSLR, but not sure now if that’s what I need

Cheers
Wayne

Thanks Wayne. In this case I had a duoband filter so I can go as long as I want. I much prefer shooting without it though as it's a OSC so I figure I want the colour not the narrowband. Unfortunately I need dark skies and until I get them it's duoband...
