NGC 5121 and Longmore 8

Can't remember if I ever posted this image so apologies if you've seen it before. This is a reprocess of the original version.

This field is near iota Centauri and shows the galaxy NGC 5121 and the planetary nebula Longmore 8. There is also an arc of nebulosity to the left of Longmore 8 of uncertain origin which apparently and surprisingly hasn't been noticed before. There are quite a few background galaxies and I think there is some IFN in this field too. Right down at the bottom right there is a funny little bit of nebulosity which I haven't been able to identify. It may be another planetary.

Anyway here it is.

Steve

It is a very interesting field Steve, at very first glance that bluish nebulosity has the look of a reflection but it doesn’t look like one at closer inspection at all. The best I can think of could be some larger fainter remnant from the planetary nebula.

Thanks David. I'm surprised it hasn't been imaged more often.

Thanks Colin. Your interpretation of the blue fits the general consensus. The term OIII shock front has been mentioned.

The double ring of the planetary nebula is delicious. Most interesting. A difficult target well done.

Interesting image Steve. You are the king of these obscure objects. That blue arc is a nice feature.

Greg.

Thanks guys. As always your comments are much appreciated. There are plenty more obscure objects where this one came from. Stay tuned.

Thanks Mike. Yes I was pretty sure I had posted it at some stage. Still I think this image is a considerable improvement on the original posting hence the decision to post it again.

Great image Steve - very faint difficult object.
The faint PN in the bottom corner is faintly visible on Simbad (AladinLite) but Longmore 8 isn't visible. The small PN doesn't have a designation on Simbad.

As far as the blue goes - there is a lot of blue in the right side of the image - doesn't look like a reflection nebula. Maybe it is a large faint PN? Could it be some sort of artifact?

Tony.

Thanks Tony. The blue is OIII emission which is somehow associated with Longmore 8 (the double ring). It seems it is some form of shock front.

Longmore 8 looks really interesting. I also really like the emission nebula too being in the field.

Thanks Paul. It's certainly an interesting field. I now have a list of all the Longmore planetaries so you will be seeing more of them soon.
