That Mars animation is really cool. Very detailed too. You can almost see the clouds moving in the atmosphere.

It's been debunked as a fake.

If true then that's a shame.
Still.... I think it looks wonderful.

The fellow who created the animation blended his own data with Hubble data then created the animation.
The irony is, if he had been upfront and honest about this it would still probably have been selected for APOD as others submit and get published, images that have been blended with Hubble data. (but they don't try to hide the fact)

I agree.

Thanks Richard.

So basically very experienced imagers like Chris Go and Damien Peach noted the miraculous resolution, and others noted clouds from 2007 Hubble images in the same place in this most recent work.

Sounds like authors data mixed with HST, stacked to single large panel, then winjupos used for animations (nothing wrong with that part).

Doesn't appear to have been anything other than outrage from the author - certainly no acceptance of guilt.

Final nail in the coffin was Chris G finding one of his jupiter images on the author's website, along with clouds and a fake Callisto superimposed (effectively impossible for 2 observers on opposite sides of earth given Jupiters rapid rotation and cloud movement).

Looks like some was 100% Hubble data, blurred a little in PS to make it look authentic.
His financial sponsor is not going to like this.
Also, the dudes wife has contacted Chris Go and has threatened to sue him for stealing her husbands images.

This whole thing is getting so weird. Stealing, fake pictures, suing? What a circus. Some people are taking this hobby to a whole new level of ridiculous.

Would have been better to have just gone 100% with Hubble data, stitched it and been up front. Still would have been a great vid!

Bit of a sorry saga, this one. It's pretty outrageous dishonesty on the part of the video creator, but was quite rapidly spotted as a fake (resolution too high, weather not changing, weather the same as one day in 2007 etc). Chris Go's demonstrations of what happens if you apply sharpening to the image (==> HST image), or wavelets (==> highly distorted image) were quite telling. Then it looks like multiple other of Jesus' images were thefts too.
I can't understand why some people do it, then think they can ever get away with it in such a specialised field, and in such a public place as APOD. The momentary fame can't be worth it. His reputation is utterly shot now.

Reminds me of the recent story of the couple who climbed Everest and somehow posted their Summit photo, having not travelled much further than base camp. Photoshop is a beautiful thing.

Not sure if that's any worse than actually climbing it and then posting the photo. In both cases the entire exercise serves nothing but their ego, except if they had climbed it, the physical damage would have been greater so good on them
