Canon $500 cash back offer 1 Nov – 31 Dec 2007

Hello

I just came across this current Canon Promotion:

Up to $500 cash back on selected products e.g. EF 24-105mm L IS USM lens when purchased with a Canon EOS Digital SLR camera.

Hmm, worth considering eh?

Cheers

I havent done the sums, but considering the price difference between a proper australian canon dealer and a canon outfit in the states, it's prob cheaper buying from the states still.

i.e. 70-200/2.8 IS from states was $2050 landed, instead of $3300-$3600 in stores.

Hi Jase

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know of a reliable outlet in the States? I saw the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM at $2436.15 locally at Dirt Cheap Cameras.

Cheers

yeah use adorama.com - they are great. the only thing you need to bear in mind is the first time you order with them, they are rather strict about providing credit card proof. but after that they are very quick to send stuff i.e. i just bought a lens on thursday morning and it arrived this morning.

Personally I have been a happy customer of Adorama for at least 5 years, having bought a D60 from them back in 2002.

I've also had good success with B&H, but they seem to no longer ship overseas.

For proof for your credit card, they will require a fax of a scan/picture of the front and back of your credit card, as well as a card statement showing your shipping address.

Thanks Jase,

I just did a quick comparison on one of the $500 cash back lenses, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM:
  • Dirt Cheap has it (Aus Wty) listed at AU $1520.05 so with $500 off that makes it $1020.05.
  • Adorama has it (Grey Import) listed at US $1039 (AU $1154 at 0.9 xchnge) so in this case, for that lens, with the cash back, it makes sense to purchase locally in Oz.
Another lens in the $500 cash back offer is the Canon EF 70-200mm f4.0L USM:
  • Price: $1107.50 (without cash back) in Oz
  • US $559 (AU $614) so again with cash back this as cheap in Oz and under local warranty.
However, you only get the $500 cash back on one lens and you have to purchase an EOS DSLR.

Hmm, food for thought eh?

Cheers

Dennis

to my knowledge dirt cheap grey import them - they do not buy it locally from canon

i.e. they do exactly what you do from adorama and add on a bit for their trouble

if that is the case, i don't think the cash back will work

Hi Jase

I did stumble on a couple of grey import sites in Oz which were cheaper than Dirt Cheap. On the Dirt Cheap website they write:

“Our Australian Guarantee

All of our products are from Autherised(sp) Australian Suppliers and Distributors, therefore all products come with a standard Australian Warranty backed by the Australian Manufacture(sp) and or Distributor.

We do not GREY IMPORT or PARALLEL IMPORT products or supply any such products, if you have been told otherwise please contact us and advise us by who and let us reasure(sp) you we do not GREY IMPORT OR PARALLEL IMPORT any product”.

So, at face value, they appear to have a standard Australian Warranty backed by the Australian Manufacturer and or Distributor which should allow for the cash back? Definitely something to check before you buy!

If you buy, e.g. the 40D and the above 2 lenses, then the scales tip in favour of Adorama I think.

Cheers

if thats true, then yes thats decent.

But I did buy a nikon d2x from them once (about 3 years ago) and when I needed warranty work on it, I had a bit of trouble. maybe it's changed.

price aside, lenses are covered internationally for warranty so it doesn't matter where you get them. camera bodies and flashguns are not.

Yeah, the whole warranty thing is a grey area. One of the Oz grey import websites I had a look at offered a local 12 month warranty (after explaining that their products were not warranted by Canon & Nikon in Australia) but you then jumped to a 3rd party website where you could purchase an additional warranty and I suspect in that case, no local $500 cash back.

Just for the record, I did notice that Canon had a US Canon cash back offer on the Adorama supplied goods too. Decisions, decisions!

Cheers

Ah yes! Indecisive Dennis, ensnared in a dilemma; dithering a propos an upgrade path from the Pentax *ist DS and kit lenses.

Sigh…

I'm tempted as well, been looking at 40D's and the 24-105 IS is on the wish list. The 40D RRP is $1899, you can get a grey import for $1450 upwards, the 24-105 IS is RRP $1999 you can get a grey import for $1300 so the grey combo is $2750, the full retail less $500 is still $3398, less whatever you can get off from the dealer (probably a couple of hundred at best).

Hi Phil

I’m considering the Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM to give me 24 to 200mm coverage within the L and IS range. Ideally, I would like to start at the bottom end with 17mm but the 17-40mm leaves a gap between 40mm and the 70-200mm.

For the Canon EOS 40D and Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM I’ve found a local web (Dirt Cheap) price of $3238.74 ($2738.74 with cash back) and a local shop price of $3642.00 ($3142) .

I really cannot consider the F2.8 variants! I’ll just wait and see – the $500 cash back runs to the end of the year. You never know what Nikon will do when the D300 becomes available!

Cheers

Dennis

One thing guys. the 24-105 is fine for happy snaps and all that but please bear in mind that it's a pretty long zoom range and the optics aren't really up there with the best of them.

If you don't mind a bit of weight and less zoom the canon 24-70/2.8L is priced about the same and whips the pants off it optically. Especially on a 1.6x crop body like the 40d.

that said I am pretty fussy when it comes to lenses. i.e. I sold the 24-70 to go even higher in pic quality. But as a zoom it is outstanding.

btw dennis the 70-200/4 IS is an absolute cracker and the IS system goes to 4 stops instead of 3 stops like on most IS lenses - one of my photographers uses it and it does the job very very well.

Thanks Gavin - I'll take a look at the 24-70 as that complements the 70-200 without the "wasted" overlap. Also, the 70-200 F4L IS USM still qualifies for the $500 cash back if I decide to be a coward and go the local Oz warranty route!

Cheers
