First LRGB image - M42

When people say "go mono, it's such a better way to image" it's best to do your research first
I was happily imaging with an asi1600 OSC and thought my pictures were of an OK standard...….then I took the step to mono with an asi1600 Pro.
How can things get sooooooo much harder by just removing that thin bayer matrix from the front of the sensor!

It has been one hell of a learning curve from the actual imaging through to processing. Here we have my first real attempt.

Yep...some of those stars are FUNKY!
That's white boy funk I'm talkin' about....not the cool kinda funk!

Oh well, is what it is and I'm putting it out there for all to see as my step one into mono.

I think I've got some good detail.
I over exposed big time on this (failure to calculate exposure time/gain correctly) which caused the star issues.
The central mask in of shorter exposures to try and fix the blown out core didn't quite work out colour/brightness wise.

Overall though I'm happy to have taken the step to mono...…...I think...….

Wow Jon, now that's a step in the right direction, if this is your first attempt at mono, one can only imagine what future images from you will be like. You're too modest, it looks like it won't take you long to get your head around it.

Just one bit of advice though, try and make your title a little more creative.

Thanks Mike. Like I said, happy with it but there are some obvious flaws in the image that need to addressed next time. At least it is all working and guiding ok. One hint for those stepping in to mono - make sure your filter slot assignment in your imaging program is correct or else your in for a world of pain! Couldn’t work out why my blue channel wasn’t getting much signal.....until I worked out I was shooting through a 3nm narrowband filter!

I’ll work on those titles....seems all these late nights have taken away my creativity!

Jon,
A giant leap here. That’s a nice M42. You’re certainly making strides with your imaging and doing a great job. I’m certain you won’t be resting on this effort and further improvement will be your motive.
Well done mate.

I preferred your first iteration to be honest. That is a really nice image. Funky stars are the bane of most mono imagers!! May I ask what make filters you used for this image?

Cheers Malcolm, appreciate the comment. I find it really hard to self critique images. Probably a little hard on myself

Filters are zwo 36 mm lrgb.
