Curiosity Markers

Does anyone knows the purpose of all those little markers that the mars rover is peppered with? It this something to give a sense of scale when they take pictures or something else? Doesn't look like it indicates joins as there are many on flat surfaces as well. The red one is also different. Some kind of cryptic hieroglyph. I know it's not frog language as I'm somewhat fluent.
