60 Minutes story
Hi All,
Its been a while since I posted here on IIS. These days my time is mainly devoted to research, however. This coming Sunday night at 7pm my astronomy story will be on 60 Minutes. Liz Hayes brought a full production crew to my observatory in Broken Hill and filmed for a week back in March then in July Liz took me to Los Angeles, NASA gave me security clearance to visit JPL and Carolyn Porco (Director of the Cassini Imaging Team) flew in from San Franciso to meet me.
Liz recorded the interview with Carolyn and I on the floor of Mission Control Space Flight Operations JPL. On the way into Mission Control NASA have the American, Australian & Spanish flags representing NASA’s deep space communications network being Goldstone, Canberra & Madrid. While an Australian film crew were in Mission Control doing a story on very excited Australian amateur, the prime receiving station was Canberra.
Carolyn is writing a book on the whole Cassini mission and during the interview asked if I would give permission for her to use some of my data in her book. Still pinching myself, really does feel like a dream.

Watching this programme, I remembered my first look at Saturn back in '73.. It was from the roof of Zagreb's Astronomical Observatory, through Zeiss 100/1000 refractor... It was my birthday and my father took me there as a birthday gift. It did not changed my life then because I was already hooked earlier
Still, this image and that feeling that evening I will never forget.

What a great story Trevor! I think Saturn is responsible for hooking many people into astronomy, myself included!!!
