fake 3D DSO - get your red-cyan glasses out!

Someone mentioned that with age and failing eyesight, astrophotography can prolong the joy in astronomy. Made me think of stereoscopic images and viewers, the one with lenses invented in 1860, then ViewMaster and then Google Cardboard, followed by the other partly-VR-headsets you put your smartphone into and then watch whatever the running app is showing you.

There should be a workflow how to make the most immersive experience from all your beautiful DSO pics, right? So that every 3 years or so on Christmas, you can view them as if you were IN THERE.
Not owing a newer, bigger smartphone as the VR-headsets require nowadays - and not having such a headset, either, is an obstacle to do what I really wanted to figure out how to achieve.

But this result here is an eye catcher, as well, isn't it? Done by using 2 copies each of someone's DSO image, adding red and cyan layers then slide one a bit to the side. Done. (as per http://strakul.blogspot.com/2012/03/...with-gimp.html )

Find those old red-cyan 3D glasses from that cinema visit if you want to look at these images. If you don't put them on I won't be made liable for health and safety issues.

These creators granted permission to post these fake 3D versions from their threads:
Placidus' Duck (NGC346, NGC371, NGC395 ) http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=170058
Octane's NGC6188 http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=137936
Avandonk's 3 recent NGC2070 (quite interesting what happens to structures in BW or, in BW plus red?) http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=170462
Cometcatcher's M16 Pillars of Creation http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=170468

I asked a planet imager for permission as well, so far no answer. If one of you guys would let me play with your planets I'd be grateful!

In fact, any DSO or planet you feel oaky being tortured in this way: throw it at me There seems to be a rule of thumb which images work well and which don't really. I'd like to figure out which is which - with more examples.

Hope you'll enjoy this little 3D space experience as much as I do.

I played with that a while ago as well. You can make them in color if you want side by side with J.P Metsavainio Photoshop method. You won't need glasses but you need to cross your eyes and relax them looking at the middle picture.
