How do you focus on the sun?

Sorry if that's been already asked but I'm interested in the best way to do this. Do you guys use live view or software focus or other system?

Bon Jour,
If there are spots about, try them, but spot-free I aim for the limb and hope for the best.

So there is no quantitative way of doing this? It's like focusing on the moon? If it looks ok it's probably ok? No techy trick that works every single time?

What are you shooting in Marc? White light, CaK or Ha? In any of them try to look for a sunspot and just live view or view it live on screen with a towell over your head. Make sure your histo is well below the saturation point.

Ha is easiest as it shows all the detail easily and you will find sharp focus readily.

I use live view, and have a towel over my head to shade the screen.

Yep. There's no technical way of doing it that I know of. It can be pretty subjective if the seeing is bad.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling there was no easy way and you had to pick up some details on the surface to focus on. The towel trick is new to me. Good tip.

This is just a thought. Try picking up a bright star (not the sun) and focussing on that, then go to the sun. I should think that anything brighter than 3rd mag should be visible through your scope.
