Observing Report -- Mudge Star Party April 2010 (Very, very, very long)

Hi All,

Welcome to an overdue and somewhat overgrown edition of the Continuing adventures of Gerald, Mudgee Observing at the Star Party 2010.

First-up, thanks once more to both John & Patti for hosting us up at Mudgee for the Annual Star Party which was, as usual, a blast.

Weather forecasts leading up to the event indicated a high likelihood of a fine Thursday and Friday night, with Saturday and Sunday looking a bit “iffy”. As it turned out we had four virtually completely clear nights. About a half hour of scruff dented Saturday night mid-evening and an hour-odd on Sunday evening was the sum total. The rest of it was a blue-sky-a-thon. Seeing varied from okay to occasionally good. There was one really nice hour of seeing early on Friday night about 7pm but apart from that it was pretty variable but never truly bad.

This was the warmest April Star party I can remember. Daytimes were sunny, consistently in the low to mid 20s and it never dropped below 12 deg C at night. On the Saturday and Sunday nights I observed the whole night in shorts and a light jacket! The skies were pretty dark too – most nights were about 21.4 on the SQM-L meter at 7pm (90mins after sunset) and rose to about 21.65 around 1am. On the Friday, Saturday and Sunday night the Gegenschein was not too hard to see just to the east of Spica in Virgo and on the Saturday night, I fancy I also saw the even fainter zodiacal band in it’s vicinity (up to 15 degrees east and west of the Gegenschein itself) looking like fat “spikes” out of the side of the Gegenschein. In fact the Gegenschein itself near Spica was bright enough to make the telescopic fields around Spica noticeably brighter in surface-brightness when I was observing many galaxies nearby (within several degrees) on the Friday and Saturday nights.

Thursday night after having been up since 6.30am I hit the wall at about 2.30am and had to go to bed. But on Friday and Saturday nights, we observed until almost 4am and 3am on the Sunday night. Long hours and dark skies made for a huge total of objects observed!

Besides all the usual stuff we do up there like the wineries and the IPSA Kebab shop, I also took a side-trip out to Hill End on the Sunday and was surprised to find the road is now almost completely sealed the whole way. It is a very beautiful place and the pies are fantastic!

Despite the huge bulk of observations below, for mine, the observing highlight of the weekend was seeing the remnant of the supernova 1987A in the LMC, near the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070) through Gary Mitchell’s ‘scope. Even at about x520, it was a tiny barely non-stellar 13-14th magnitude spot in a low-power field with about 300 faint stars. Kudos to Gary for sleuthing it down from the photos and finding the right one. For myself, apart from several hours enjoying my favourites (as we all do) I observed more than a few Galaxies in Hydra, Leo, Coma, Sextans and Centaurus. Never thought I’d say this but I believe I have all but emptied Virgo down to 15th magnitude — I’ve only got about 20-odd galaxies left on my Virgo lists left to see. Leo only has 40-odd left to see too.

The speakers this party were Mike Salway and Chris Toohey on the Saturday afternoon and both gave very enjoyable talks. I particularly liked Chris’s as it touched on the travails Galileo endured in trying to convince his contemporaries of the reality of what he saw through his telescope. Thanks to both gentlemen for their thoughtful input.

Okay, so here are my observations for the weekend (very, very, very, very long report follows)

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2900 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 30m 15.2s Dec: +04° 08' 39"
Mag: 13.7 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.7'x1.4'
Class: SBcd: P.A.: 130 Inclination: 1 R.V.: +5354 Source: RC3

Note R.V. This is a fairly faint eg of lowish SB quite small in a thinly scattered star field as a small oval about 50" x 30" in about PA 90 with a weak broad central brightening with no evidence of core or nucleus. Hardly brightens at all to centre. Very faint star to the SW by just over 1'.

x185 27' x247 20'

IC 542 Galaxy *
RA: 09 31m 06.2s Dec: -13° 10' 54"
Mag: 14.8 S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.1'x0.3' Class: (R')SB(rs)0/a:
P.A.: 98 Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: RC3 *

This is a very small but not unreasonable SB edge on spiral type about 40" x 10" in about PA 90. Appears just to the N of a tri of mag 13.5 *s with another one in the centre looking like the back end of Canis Major. Grows broadly and mod to the axis nr centre but no evidence of core or nucleus.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2902 IC 543 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 30m 52.9s Dec: -14° 44' 06"
Mag: 12.2 (V) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.4'x1.1' Class: SA(s)0^:
P.A.: 35 Inclination: --- R.V.: +2035 Source: RC3 *

This is a fairly good SB pretty obvious eg that look like a very distant elliptical type. Round, grows from indefinite edges evenly and slightly at first and then nr centre strongly to a bright non-*ar nucleus. There is a mag 14.5 * just off the halo to the NW. Maybe just over 1' diameter.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2917 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 34m 27.1s Dec: -02° 30' 18"
Mag: 14.6 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.2'x0.3' Class: S0+
P.A.: 169 Inclination: 6 R.V.: +3675 Source: RC3 *

This a pretty small but strongly elong eg found about 3' to the NNW of a 10th mag *. Seems to be in PA 0, about 50" x 10" oval, weak outer halo with a slightly brighter streak through most of the MA and a slightly brighter core zone and very faint stellaring dead centre.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2945 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 37m 41.1s Dec: -22° 02' 05"
Mag: 13.2 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.6'x1.4' Class: SA0-:
P.A.: 142 Inclination: --- R.V.: +4630 Source: RC3 *

This is an easy to see small eg, round and appears almost inside a small longish tri of mag 14 & 15 *s not much larger than the eg. Probably 45" diameter, round, grows broadly and slightly at first then nr centre moderately to a non-*ar spot in the centre. Good SB overall.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2956 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 39m 17.1s Dec: -19° 06' 03"
Mag: 15.2 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 0.9'x0.3' Class: SB(s)b?
P.A.: 55 Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: RC3 *

This took quite a bit of tracking down and is very faint. Forms an almost perfect E Tri with a couple of *s to its E mags 10 & 11 around 3.5' a side. Very faint, difficult to see only occasionally visible as a 20-30" diameter patch with no apparent central brightening.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2951 Multi-Galaxy Sys *
RA: 09h 39m 40.8s Dec: -00° 14' 07"
Mag: 15.1 S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 0.5'x0.5' Class: E
P.A.: --- Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: PGC *

This eg is found near the 2nd brightest * in a straggling line of mag 10-13 *s that crosses the field E-W. Seems elong in PA 90, small mod faint haze, oval, 30" x 20" diameter rising broadly and slightly to centre without zones or nucleus.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2975 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 41m 16.1s Dec: -16° 40' 26"
Mag: 15.4 S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 0.7'x0.6' Class: E/S0
P.A.: 114 Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: PGC *

This is a very, very faint and small eg. Appears SE by 2' from a mag 10.5 * that seems to have a vaguely yellowish tint and is part of an asterism of similar brightness stars that form a "keystone" style asterism about 7' across as a tiny spot of haze maybe 15" diameter of very, very LSB and no central brightening.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2969 Mkn 1235 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 41m 54.6s Dec: -08° 36' 10"
Mag: 15.5 S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.3'x1.1' Class: SA(s)c pec:
P.A.: 137 Inclination: --- R.V.: +4960 Source: RC3 *

While I started this observation a 15th magnitude satellite floated straight through this eg and temporarily gave it a *ar nucleus. This is a very strange and diffuse eg that looks a little more like a faint PNe than an eg. Pointed at by two 11th & 12th mag *s that are to its NW 5' away. A bit over an arc-minute diameter, possibly 1.25', round and very diffuse edged halo growing broadly and slightly to centre without zones and no nucleus though it does occasionally seems vaguely blotchy or uneven in SB particularly in the S or SW areas that may be a little brighter than the balance.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 2996 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 46m 30.2s Dec: -21° 34' 16"
Mag: 13.5 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.5'x1.2' Class: S0+ pec:
P.A.: 115 Inclination: --- R.V.: +8775 Source: RC3 *

Note the R.V. This eg is found to the W of a mag 11 * that is a little distracting to the view. Seems round, 50" diameter with a round very LSB outer halo, small somewhat brighter core and a faint stellaring at the centre and maybe marginally brighter on the N side compared to the S. There is a very faint mag 15.5 * on the S edge of the halo or just outside.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 3028 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 49m 54.0s Dec: -19° 11' 04"
Mag: 13.5 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.3'x0.9' Class: Sb pec:
P.A.: 48 Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: RC3 *

This is a fairly small but reasonably obvious round eg which is not far from the brightest star in the field at about mag 12 to the eg's SE by 3'. Round, lowish but not unreasonable SB, about 50" diameter and grows broadly and slightly to centre with no evidence of zones or nucleus.

NGC 3030 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 50m 10.5s Dec: -12° 13' 34"
Mag: 14.6 S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 0.8'x0.8' Class: E/S0
P.A.: --- Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: PGC*

MCG -2-25-20 PGC 28308 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 50m 13.9s Dec: -12° 03' 26"
Mag: 14.5 S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.5'x0.1' Class: Sd: sp
P.A.: 125 Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: RC3 *

-30 forms the 4th and faintest * at the NE tip of a 6' x 3' rectangle of mag 10 & 11 *s. Good SB 50" diameter, round and grows from indefinite edges broadly and slightly at first and then nr centre more strongly towards an occasional sub-stellar nucleus. MCG -2-25-20 is about 10 due N.

It is a very faint and elong eg sticking out of the SE side of a mag 12.5 * as an exceptionally faint ray of gossamer probably 1.5' long in PA 120 with no apparent central brightening. Lovely.

x185 27' x247 20'

NGC 3037 Galaxy *
RA: 09h 51m 24.3s Dec: -27° 00' 38"
Mag: 13.6 (P) S.B.: --- B-V: --- Size: 1.2'x1.0' Class: IB(s)m
P.A.: 51 Inclination: --- R.V.: --- Source: RC3 *

This eg is almost found at the mid-point of a couple of * of mag 10 * about 12' apart aligned NE-SW and is pointed at by a couple of mag 14 *s to its SE. Fairly LSB but still reasonable blob possibly slightly oval in PA 30 that seems to have a slightly brighter SW end but is otherwise fairly homogenous with indefinite edges. Slightly oval 1' x 50" in PA 30.

Pt 2 to follow ...

NGC 3052 is the brightest of of this group by a margin. Mod bright, slightly oval in PA 90 about 1.25' x 1' with a broad slight concentration to centre and a possible weakly brighter spot at centre

-45 is W by 15' from -52 and no worse than mod faint, easy to see, Elong oval shape in PA 30 and probably 1.25' x 30" growing broadly and slightly to centre without zones core or nucleus. Reasonable SB not hard to see. NNW by 25' is ESO 556-19.

ESO 556-19 a much lower SB patch probably close to 1' diameter, round growing hardly at all to centre with no core/nucleus.

This is a small elong eg, pointed oval maybe 50" x 30" in P30 growing broadly and slightly to the axis near centre without zones, core or nucleus. There is a mag 13.5 * just off the flank to the NW.

x185 27' x247 20'

This is a very faint, LSB but excellent edge on eg spiral in PA 30. Seems to be about 1.5' x 10" of almost consistent SB -- only weakly brighter in the centre. Unlike the DSS image the tips don't seem to be sharp but has a mag 12.5 - 13 * is barely off the halo SE below the centre. No core or nucleus visible.

This took a bit of time to pick up in a pretty blank field, no *s near the eg. Very diffuse, very LSB slightly oval blob maybe 1.25' x 1' in PA 150, growing broadly and slightly to the centre without zones or nucleus.

These two took a bit of picking up and are side-by-side tiny spots of haze only 20" apart E-W of each other. They are virtually identical in appearance, about 20" diameter, very faint and with slight brightening to the centre but no other structure visible

x185 27' x247 20'

This is a fairly small but pretty obvious eg that is no worse than mod faint found to the NE of a mag 8.5 * that seems yellowish by about 4'. Seems about 1.25-1.5' diameter growing broadly and slightly to centre where there is a slightly brighter, not well defined central zone at centre about 1/2 the size of the eg but no real nucleus.

4418 is a pretty obvious small eg in about PA 60 at the end of a string of faint *s heading in its direction from the SW with the br * nearest the eg. Probably elong roughly oval in about PA 60, maybe 1' x 20" with a small round 15" diameter slightly brighter core but no real nucleus. There is a mag 15 * just off the SW end. MCG +0-32-13 is 2' SE.

MCG +0-32-13 is nothing more than an almost stellar spot of gossamer maybe 10" diameter of extremely LSB only visible intermittently at x247.

This is a mod to somewhat faint small eg nestled next to a mag 14 * imm to its N. Quite small, round about 30" diameter, grows evenly and slightly to centre but near centre moderately, with no core or nucleus visible apart from an occasional whiff of a sub-stellar spot in the centre. Quite a few faint *s in the field.

This eg is very nearly *ar at first glance but is instead elong and tipped in PA 120. Very tiny, good SB in the order of 20" x 5" dominated by a mag 15 *ar nucleus and rises strongly to the axis nr centre.

These three very small very faint and elong spirals all fit in the one ep field and form a tri. The brightest is -28 and it is found to the E of a 14th mag * by 1'. In PA 150 it has the largest halo, a little fatter and longer than the others 1.25' x 15" growing broadly and slightly to centre but no real core or nucleus.

5' E is -27 that is between 11th and 12 mag *s aligned NW-SE. It is in PA 45 and has slightly lower SB, slightly shorter and thinner, 1' x 10" with no core or nucleus visible. Grows weakly to centre and overall has very low SB.

MCG -3-26-21 is 6' NNW of -27 and forms an I tri with the other two. In the same PA as -27, and very similar looking, a fraction fainter maybe 50" x 5" and grows weakly to the axis nr centre, but a beautiful trio.

How did this (-038) come to be assessed at mag 14.9? Extremely ! faint and tiny scrap of mist, maybe <10" diameter at best visible 30-40% of the time. Featureless.7' SW of a mag 7 *.

10' SE of the same * is MCG -2-26-37 which is an almost identical scrap of gossamer only intermittently visible. -39 is the same distance from that * NE and is slightly brighter and larger, 20" diameter but still very, very faint and a little brighter at centre.

-71 is an easy to see good SB eg maybe 1' diameter and just off-round in PA 0. Brightens from very diffuse edges evenly and mod to the centre to a weak faint spot dead centre. ESO 567-28 is one field SW as a very tiny sliver of mist 40" x ?? that brightens weakly to centre and has very, very LSB. Mag 15 * at it's NE tip.

this is a mod bright easy to see eg that is fairly small, seems to be round just over 1' diameter. Grows broadly and slightly to the centre without zones or apparent nucleus. There is a mag 13.5 * just a little off the halo, 30-40" to the SE.

In a well populated field for Hydra with a lot of mag 9-12 *s. Small oval eg a little over 1' x 40" in PA 150 with a slight brightening to the major axis through most of it's length. Faint *ar nucleus. Good SB and easy to see.

This is a beautiful little edge on spiral eg in PA 90 with a mag 14.5 *at the E tip, on axis. Maybe nearly 1.5' long hardly 10" wide in PA 90, LSB outer halo but a fairly well defined, slightly to mod brighter small well defined elong core/nucleus with a whiff of a stellaring at centre.

This is a small to very small very LSB eg found to the SSW by about 2.5' from a mag 13.5 *. Small 50" diameter halo growing broadly and weakly to centre. Has quite LSB, but can be held steadily with AV. Slightly elong in about PA 150.

This eg makes a small 2.5' a side tri with a couple of mag 14.5 "s to its SE and NE. Almost seems *ar at first glance but is slightly elong in PA 120 dominated by a very small somewhat brighter core zone that occasionally looks stellar. Seems about 1' x 40" in PA 120.

-76 appears in a very barren field, so few *s. Appears almost between a couple of mag 15 *s about 2.5' apart oriented N-S. A bit over 1' diameter, round, very diffuse edged and LSB growing slightly to centre with a hint of a very small weakly br zone dead centre -- seems to grow stronger with lengthened observation. Definite small, slightly br zone in centre. IC 3131 is 20' NW

IC 3131 is no more than a tiny spot of gossamer brightening slightly to centre about 15" diameter, round adjacent to a small trapezium of mag 13.5 - 15.5 *s immediately to its W.

These two eg are pretty close to each other, probably 4' apart with -85 in PA 30 from -79 and there are a couple of very faint mag 14.5 *s between the two. -79 is the brighter, both seem round, -79 slightly the larger about 40" diameter. -85 30" across -79 grows weakly to centre where there is an occasional very faint *ar nucleus and -85 is possibly weakly elong off-round in PA 30 with no evidence of zones or nucleus.

This is an exceptionally beautiful, V/LSB needle-like edge on eg in PA 0. A slender sliver of gossamer 1.75' x 5". the DSS shows a quite bright core but this is not really evident in the ep. A creamy coloured 8th mag * is 3' E that is somewhat of a distraction. Very low SB and took some time to see its full extent and not immediately visible at first glance.

Dealing with the NGC objects first -96 is certainly the dominant in a close pair with -97 all but invisible about 30" to it's North. -96 is interesting with what appears to be a double condensation. Seems slightly elong, about 50" x 30" in PA 45 and oval but with a small 10" dia slightly brighter core zone almost a sub-stellar spot. But there is also a very small stellaring in the SW of the halo 3/4ths of the way out to the edge in the opposite direction to -97. Skyview indicates this is the star USNOA2 0900-07132201 at mag 16.3.

-97 just to the N of -96 is a threshold almost stellar spot of gossamer with no structure visible.

One field E is the IC pair. 20' E of the NGC egs. These are both extremely faint and LSB egs with -25 slightly the larger and brighter. Both are in PA 45. -25 is 50" x 20" uniformly V/LSB. -29 is only 20" diameter and slightly oval in PA 45, almost at threshold and difficult to see. Intermittent detection with A.V.

Both seem round, or -05 maybe slightly elong in PA 30 -- it is 1.25' diameter grows broadly & slightly to centre without zones or apparent nucleus. -06 is a little smaller, 40-50" diameter, similar SB to -05 growing slightly to the centre without zones. Both have mod low SB.

Frosty Leo Proto-Planetary Nebula
IRAS 09371+1212
RA 09h 39m 53.96s Dec +11° 58' 52.4

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frosty_Leo_Nebula

From Wiki:

The Frosty Leo Nebula is a proto-planetary nebula (PPN) located roughly at 3,000 light-years (Davis et al. 2005) away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Leo. It is a spectral bipolar nebula. Its central star is of optical spectral type K7II, by itself called Frosty Leo. It is unusual in that it has an extremely deep absorption feature at 3.1 µm and is unusually located at more than 900 pc above the plane of our galaxy.(Bourke et al. 2000) Further, as of 1990, it has the only known PPN circumstellar outflow in which crystalline ice dominates the long-wavelength emission spectrum and the only known PPN with point-reflection-symmetric deviations from axial symmetry.

This Mag 10.5 PPn appears non-stellar at magnifications of x247 and above, but very small, only a few arc-seconds diameter and has a light-blue colour. No structure visible.

These 5 eg form a group about 20' SW from the bright eg NGC 4365. They are in a wiggly line N-S. NGC 4343 is the brightest and S most in the group and is easy to see -- somewhat elong in PA 120 with a small round slightly brighter core zone 1.5' x 45" LSB diffuse outer halo growing to the axis nr centre and core/nucleus.

NGC 4342 is S by 5'. Slightly better SB than -43 but smaller almost *ar nucleus at about mag 14, small halo 40 x 20" growing mod to centre and dominated by the nucleus.

NGC 4341 is 5' NE from -42. Elong in about PA 90, 40" x 20" but fainter and lower SB than the preceding two. Has a faint halo growing slightly to centre and a faint *ar nucleus. IC 3259 is 5' N and IC 3267 is 5' SE from -41.

-67 is a very small very LSB spot 30" diameter with a hint of a very faint spot core/nucleus and faint halo. -59 is slightly elong in PA 0, off-round faint LSB halo 30" diameter, very LSB weak brightening to centre. -67 is possibly slightly larger and brighter overall than -59.

This small quite faint eg is a low power field from the centre of the Virgo cluster. Very small and very faint eg (-93). Maybe 20" diameter, round and of consistent SB -- perhaps grows weakly to centre without zones.

-88 is a very tiny 10" diameter spot of haze about 5' SW of -93. Extremely faint. Only intermittently visible. No structure visible.

This is a very tiny and extremely faint eg found between a mag 14 & 15 *s aligned E-W. 20" diameter spot if that of gossamer with no apparent central brightening. Not easily visible in the 12mm -- a little easier in the 9mm.

This eg sits isolated in the 5-6' away from anything of note. Plain-jane small round just under 1' diameter growing broadly and slightly to the centre without zones, core or nucleus.

This eg is to the SW by 6' from an 8th mag *. Small, round maybe 1' diameter and grows broadly and slightly to centre without nucleus. SB is okay without being high. There is an intermittently visible 15th mag sparkle on edge of the halo to the SW.

This is a lovely, mod bright eg. Good sized elong spiral maybe 2.75' x 1' grows only weakly in the outer halo to centre but has a large not well defined mod brighter core but no apparent nucleus. The SB is quite good and it's pretty easy to see. Dunno how this one escaped up till now.

-13 is 4' SW of an 8th mag * that is somewhat of a distraction. Pretty faint but not too hard to see. Small, 40", round with a slight central brightening and a whiff of a very faint stellaring in the centre. There is a very faint * just off the SW edge of the halo. -18 is fainter in SB and magnitude. It is 5' SSE of that * as a really very, very faint ephemeral scrap of weak gossamer that seems about 40" diameter and has no structure. Took some time to see.

-37 is a about 12' SE of -18 in an adjoining field and is no more that 10" diameter -- and almost *ar spot of weak haze no structure.

-03 is by far and away the brightest of these and it is the RA in a small RA tri with a mag 11 * to its SSW 3' and a mag 12.5 * to its E 6'. An oval eg not as big of as bright as it would seem in the DSS pic but pretty good, probably 2' x 40" in PA 15 good SB halo with a small maybe 10" diameter round mod br core zone but no apparent nucleus. To it's N 6' is IC 3470.

-70 seems fainter on the DSS than in the ep though somewhat fainter and smaller than -03. Round 30" diameter, reasonable SB growing broadly and slightly in brightness to the centre but no *s associated. To its NE by 10 is a short line of three very small and faint to very faint egs -- IC 3481, 81A and -83.

-81 is similar in appearance to -70 about 30" diameter, slightly lower in SB rising mod to centre where there is a very faint stellaring and is 3' SSE of a mag 12 *. -81A is only 40” E as a very tiny 10" spot of ephemeral mist, very LSB but rising to centre. Sky-Map.org shows a very interesting faint bridge between these two eg, the brighter of which is an ARP eg. This feature not seen in the ep -- obviously. -83 is 3' SE of these two.

-83 is immediately S of an 11th mag * which is very distracting and difficult. Maybe 15" diameter spot -- difficult to see structure that close to a "bright" star.

-27 is about 2.75' x 30" in PA 75, lowish SB outer halo but there is a quite noticeably brighter small long oval axial streak at centre maybe 1' long in the same PA containing a small, slightly brighter sub-stellar nucleus. The SB overall is quite good.

These three small and faint egs form an evenly spaced line running SW to NE crossing most of the field. -90 is at the SW end, -10 at the NE end and -99 centre. -99 is also 10' NW of a mag 8*. -99 in the centre is the best though. Elong in PA 150 pointing at the bright *, reasonable though lowish SB, 50" x 10" seems to grow a little tothe axis nr centre.

-90 is a very tiny, 10" diameter spot of ephemeral gossamer, no structure seen. -10 is again, only about 15" diameter and probably a fraction brighter than -90, though the view is hampered by a mag 13 * immediately NE. Very faint. difficult though not as bad as -90.

-99 is a very tiny and faint eg whcih is not far from 5105. 10-20" diameter, very small weak patch of mist, very LSB.

-05 is 12-13' away SE, somewhat larger slightly higher SB weak-edged patch 1.25' diameter, round, kind of curiously underlined in the ep with two pairs of wide pairs to its S that point approx E-W. Occasionally you seem to get a hint of a weakly brighter patch in the centre. Also in the same field is -11 which curiously does not appear in the Argo Navis database ! This may explain why from NGC/IC project:

NGC 5110 = NGC 5111. The NGC position for N5111 (from the Herschels) is excellent, while that for N5110 from Swift's third list is a little off. But
the identity is clinched by Swift's note that the object is "in line with 2 pB
stars".

The confusion has come from LEDA which incorrectly adopted a much fainter galaxy as N5111. Though this galaxy has stars nearby, they form a line to the north, with the galaxy being well off the line. It is also enough fainter that Swift probably would not have swept it up given the proximity of the brighter object 19 seconds east and six arcmin north.

The identity, by the way, was first suggested by Reinmuth in "Die Nebel
Herschel." - Dr. Harold G. Corwin, Jr.

The object notes I'm recording here relate to NGC 5111 as per Megastar. In an adjacent field to -99 is -11 probably 1' diameter or even 1.25', good SB rising moderately and evenly to centre where there is a mod br core zone and a faint *ar nucleus. 6' SE is 5110.

A really tiny very, very faint spot of gossamer, 10-15" diameter and no visible structure. Hardly to be seen, took quite a bit of picking up.

This is in a pretty blank little hole, very very tiny, perhaps only 15-20" diameter, round and grows slightly to centre where there is an occasionally visible very faint stellaring.

See NGC/IC:

IC 888 = NGC 5136. Swift's position for IC 888, from his 8th list of "new"
nebulae, is within 3 seconds of being exactly 1 minute of time off the NGC
position (from the Herschels). Swift's description fits the object, so I
suspect that he simply made a 1 minute error when reading the position from his setting circles.

Another, though more remote, possibility for the identity of the IC object is
CGCG 072-073. This has the correct right ascension, but the declination is 26 arcmin off and the object is considerably fainter than NGC 5136. Swift could have seen it -- but the 1 time-minute error for the brighter galaxy is more compelling. - Dr. Harold G. Corwin, Jr.

The two IC egs here are only 6' apart N-S of each other with -75 to the N. -75 is the brighter and seems weakly elong in about PA 120. Looks better than the plate. 1' x 40" diffuse looking lowish but okay SB grows slightly to centre without zones. -74 is to the S and is smaller, round and is within a short line of 3 mag 14 *s aligned NW-SE. Small to very small 20-30" diameter growing broadly and slightly to centre without zones or nucleus.

MCG -1-25-59 is 5' NE of -75 as an almost *ar spot of mist, about 15" diameter and no structure. This is my 3,000th recorded observation of a galaxy!!

MCG -1-26-2 is a small LSB very elong eg found 2 medium powered fields to the SE from the above group of 3. Quite LSB 1.5' x 15" growing slightly to the axis nr centre no zones, core or nucleus.

-90 is 30-40" diameter and a 11th mag * is on its N border. Grows broadly and slightly to centre with a small slightly brighter core and a very faint *ar nucleus.

-93 is the = faintest and only 20" diameter if that rising slightly to centre. It is 2' W of the tri.

-86 is 5' E of the tri, maybe slightly elong too in PA 150. 30" across rising slightly to centre. Low SB

-92 looks very similar to -86 save that the PA is 30. It is 3' S of the tri.

-101 is = faintest and the most clearly elong. 30" x 5" in PA 150, very, very faint and LSB growing weakly to centre.

These three eg are in a long RA tri pointing S about 12' long with NGC 5210 at the S tip. -08 & -09 are E-W of each other about 3' apart. The field is almost completely blank nothing brighter than 14th mag and only a handful of those.

-08 has a slightly brighter core of the two together and is slightly elong in PA 175, 1' x 10" faint and low SB with a small slightly brighter elong core and a threshold mag *ar nucleus.

-09 is a little more diffuse, 40" across and has low SB rising slightly to centre.

-10 seems to be round, just on or perhaps just bigger than 1', grows broadly and slightly to the centre without zones, core or nucleus. Of the three, -10 probably has fractionally better SB.

These three eg form a 10' line from N-S -26, -21,- 22. starting with the S most, -22 is a small, fairly faint eg about 50" diameter maybe just off round in PA 0 and brightens slightly to centre without core or nucleus. This is the brightest of the 3. -21 is 4' N.

-21 is the 2nd brightest but is still very faint and quite elong in PA 90, 1' x 5" very slender sliver of very faint mist weakly brighter in the centre. Occasionally there seems to be a threshold mag stellaring in the centre.

-26 is 5' further N and is an exceptionally faint and tiny eg. Occasionally, barely visible as a 10" spot of the weakest gossamer no structure.

I see this last eg was discovered by Dryer himself with the 72" at Birr Castle. There are no observing notes there by Gottlieb. Am I the first to actually see this eg since its discovery in 1877? I wonder ?

Very faint and very small eg, round found just to the E of a mag 11.5 * that has a mag 14.5 companion to its N, by 3'. Maybe nearly 1' diameter, looks bigger than the DSS image, perhaps 50", round indefinite edges growing broadly and slightly to centre without zones or apparent nucleus.

This eg is found a little to the SW from a mag 12.5 * and there is also a mag 14.5 * on the edge of the halo at the NE and another at mag 15 at the SW extremity. Small, slightly oval in PA 60, 1' x 50" slightly oval, lowish to fairly low SB growing from indefinite edges growing broadly and slightly to centre where there is a weakly to slightly brighter, very small core-zone dead centre.

-89 is 8' due W of a 7th mag * and seems better than the DSS shows it. Small round and fairly faint, about 40" diameter, fairly easy to see grows slightly and evenly to centre where there sometimes seems to be a faint stellaring. 6' NW past a mag 13 * is -88.

-88 is very similar just a little fainter and a fraction smaller than -89.

This is a somewhat difficult and frustrating galaxy cluster to observe because to the richness of the starfields and the bright background due to the Milky Way. Makes identification difficult because star-patterns are very easy to confuse because there simply are so many stars. All these egs have low to very low surface brightnesses and it is nearly impossible to properly estimate sizes in the ep because of the brightness of the background sky. The major 3 egs are ESO 137-6, -8 & 10 in a triangle with -10 at the northern tip. This tri is about 6 arc-mins a side.

-10 is seen to be slightly elong in PA 0 and is the brightest of all. It has a short line of 3 mags 12-13 *s not far to the W. 1.5' x 40" in PA 0 and has a small slightly brighter core.

-06 & -08 are E-W of each other and are simple, approx 1' diameter
spots of LSB haze brightening slightly to centre. Between -10 & -8 is -11 which is somewhat to much fainter -- a spot of mist perhaps 30" diameter with a weak central brightening. A line extended from -8 thru -10 and extended N about 10 sees -7 that is similar to 11 though has slightly higher SB. From these 5, one field W is the 15' long line of -1, -2, -4 & -3 running N-S.

Of this four, -2 & -3 are the brightest though -3 has lower SB and is a little bigger. -3 is about 1' x 40" and brightens weakly to centre and has very LSB. -2 is smaller, about 40" diameter, round but has better SB brightening slightly to centre.-4 is almost between -2 & -3 as a tiny 20" dia round spot of gossamer hardly brighter than the background as is -1 at the N end of this line.

Far off the E side of the cluster -16 sits all by itself a 1/2 degree SE of -10 as a small 30" diameter spot of very LSB mist with no detectable brightening to centre.

Note the R.Vs on these eg. These 5 are all confirmed members of AGC 2052 a large, rich supergiant galaxy cluster 150 Mpc distant (490 Mly).

IC 1112 is on the NE edge of the cluster (cluster centre assumed to be MCG +1-39-12) 20 away. It is W of a mag 14 * by 2'. Small, faint and difficult. Tiny, 15" diameter very LSB, round, grows slightly to centre without nucleus.

At the assumed centre of the cluster, is MCG +1-39-12. It is small, 20" diameter LSB and faint spot about 30" diameter with slight central brightening. Just outside its halo to the S is PGC 54528 as a tiny, 10" diameter spot of gossamer.

Similarly, -93 & -50 are equidistant 10' NW and SE of the assumed centre as tiny, 10" dia round spots of gossamer with no structure visible.

NGC 3531 = NGC 3526. Holden misidentified the star he noticed 46.5 seconds preceding the galaxy. When the correct star is used (BD +7 2412, not 2413 as Holden wrote), his position falls close to that of NGC 3526 = Marth 215. The descriptions are virtually identical, and Holden notes the star just southwest of the galaxy.

Spitaler was the first to suggest the identity. He found IC 670 near Holden's position, but that is fainter and does not agree with either of the earlier descriptions, so Spitaler -- correctly -- called I670 a "nova." - Dr. Harold G. Corwin, Jr.

There are four tiny, tiny spots of mist here, one somewhat brighter than the other 3. -70 is by some margin the easiest to see, the other 3 basically the same in appearance and size. -70 is about 30" diameter growing broadly and slightly to centre without zones or nucleus. Faint and quite LSB.

the other 3 are to the NE, S and SE within 2'. The one to the NE is -74. Are all about 15" diameter intermittently visible spots of gossamer, no structure. Very, very faint.

-98 in the centre of this group is the brightest but is still pretty faint, beside a couple of mag 14 *s. Round, small, about 50" diameter growing broadly and slightly to centre from indefinite edges. At centre is a small round 5"-odd dia mod brighter core zone. SB nr centre is not bad. Mag 14 * on the edge of the halo at the N.

-92 is almost edge on spiral. Very, very faint thin lens shaped patch of gossamer. Difficult to gauge size. 1.5' x 20" brightening weakly to centre.

This is a reasonable SB but small eg making a big RA tri with mags 8 & 9 *s 12' to the NW and SW. Slightly off-round oval in PA 0, 40" x 20" reasonable SB halo brightening weakly to the centre without core or nucleus.

-05 forms a longish, flat tri with mags 12 & 10 *s to its SE 3' and WSW 9'. Extremely LSB, slightly elong oval in PA 90 but good size, 2' x 1.5' weak edged halo with a very faint * embedded in the SE end -- mag 15.5. Brightens weakly if at all to centre without core or nucleus. Extremely LSB.

This is a lovely pair. -19 is about 10' to due E of -13. Both fairly bright egs, -13 is a good sized slightly oval halo, 2 x 1.75 in PA 90, very diffuse and LSB outer halo. About 40" round slightly brighter core zone a little off-set to the W -- toward -19, with a very faint, tiny spot nucleus in the centre of the core.

-19 is a much elong eg in PA 90 and appears 2' S of a mag 11 *. Probably about 2.25' x 15" very diffuse LSB outer halo brightening weakly to centre where there is a small 20" long mod brighter streak core with a faint stellaring at centre.

-18 and -42 are in a side-by-side pair, not quite in contact E-W of each other with -18 to the E. These are pretty faint and LSB and a mag 10 * is just 1.5' NE of the two. Both seem to be similarly bright with -18 slightly the larger. Both round, about 40" diameter, very LSB growing broadly and slightly to the centre without nucleus. -39 is 4' SW and -41 is 6' S. Both are very similar to each other, about 20" diameter. -41 is perhaps a fraction the brighter of the two, round and growing slightly to centre without zones or nucleus.

This eg is about 2.5' N of a mag 14 *. Pretty small to tiny, round, about 40" diameter, quite LSB growing broadly and slightly to centre with an occasional whiff of a weakly brighter core zone about 1/4th the size of the halo.

This eg is quite attractive edge-on LSB lens-shaped spiral perhaps 2.25' x 10" in PA 0. There is a small Tri of mag 13 & 14 *s to its NE by a few arc mins. It also has a mag 16 * in the halo 3/4 of the way out on the N end. Reasonable though lowish SB over most of it, though the tips are faint. Grows weakly to centre in the outer halo but near centre moderately to an axial streak through the central 1' of length.

These two are a medium-powered field SW of NGC 5746. -40 is in a fairly blank field and is an elong oval-shaped spiral. In PA 175. Maybe 2.25' x 40" pretty low SB outer halo, small slightly brighter zone in the centre and a whiff of a weakly brighter, very small spot in the centre. -38 is on a very blank area, about 7' SW. Tiny and faint, LSB spot with no real core or nucleus. About 15" diameter.

These two appear in a very barren field. The two appear as a merged halo slightly elong in PA 0 with two very faint condensation, the S one is a little brighter. The whole halo would be 40" x 20" of very LSB and grows slightly to the two condensations.

These two appear almost touching N-S a little to the W of a short curved line of 3 mags 11 & 12 *s. Both seem better than the DSS indicates. -67 seems the brighter or at least has better SB. It is round, probably 1' diameter growing at first broadly and slightly then nr centre moderately to a faint spot at centre. -66 is about 40-50" long brightening broadly and slightly to centre and has lower SB and has no nucleus. The centres are only 3' apart.

Of these three that are in a short S-N line about 6' long, -71 at the southern end is easily the brightest. 30" diameter, round and grows slightly to centre where there is a faint stellaring. -72 is 5' N at the N end of the line is 2nd brightest, -73 is faintest but only marginally fainter than -72. Both are very tiny, at most 15" diameter, very, very LSB no structure visible.

-13 is a large bright eg and is contained within a 5' a side box of mag 12 *s. Good sized, slightly oval halo in about PA 135, maybe nearly 2' diameter, very LSB tenuous outer halo and at centre is a small slightly brighter zone and a good stellaring in the centre. Overall good SB. 14 is 4' SE.

-14 very small reasonable SB spot 20-30" diameter with a threshold mag stellaring at centre. -11 is 10' SW and is of similar description save that it seems a tad fainter.

MCG +0-38-18 is 15' NE of -13 and is a very LSB tenuous spot about 30" diameter with no structure and brightens weakly to centre.

This eg is to the S of a long thin I tri that points away from it and made up by mag 12 *s. Elong in about PA 60, and has two faint *s below the S flank, mags 14 & 15.5. Attractive faint spindle shaped 1.5' x 20" broad slight increase in brightness to centre, overall SB is quite good. only Mod faint, and has a small elong weakly br zone at centre.

Yep, that's 375 objects observed and recorded over the weekend not to mention the several dozen favorites visited!

Impressively extensive as always Les

I knew I should have moved my scope down to where you guys were, I could have also enjoyed some music, they don't like it up on the field...

What an incredible marathon of observing (and writing up). I can well believe that with this type of effort you may have observed all of the galaxies <15th mag in Virgo. Very impressive effort Les and thanks for the report. As Sab says, good reading for cloudy nights and some new targets to find. Frosty Leo a must - not least for its fantastic moniker.
