Question 430ex - Manually fire

I'm concerned to not so far find an answer to this on the web - perhaps someone here has good knowledge of this flash, I am new to flash photography.

Is there a way to manually fire the 430ex II flash ? Particuarlly, when the flash is off-camera, simply make the flash output a single burst?

I think I have tried every possible combination of buttons

Thanks,
Roger.

Thanks Tony, much appreciated. Shows my newbie status with regard to flashes that I didn't know to look for terminology "test". It never ocured to me the light was a button too!
