Observations june 2, 2010

12” DOBSONIAN
Naglers 22, 12 and 9
Seeing and transparency 4 out of 5. Dew: very little.

NGC 6453 – GC – SCORPIUS
RA 17.50.51 DEC -34.35.35
SIZE 3.5’
MAG 9.8
Not far from M80 lies this globular which is quite small, faint and diffuse.

NGC 6441 – GC – SCORPIUS
RA 17.50 12 DEC -37.03.04
SIZE 7.8’
MAG 7.2
This globular appear to have a small, rather intense core region, the outer areas mottled but no real resolution.

NGC 6302 – PN – SCORPIUS
RA 17.13.44 DEC -37.06.14
SIZE 270” x 100”
MAG 9.1
Well known Bug Nebula, appeared to have a very concentrated almost stellar core which is not central. This makes one extension appear much longer than the other.

NGC 6139 – GC – SCORPIUS
RA 16.27.40 DEC -38.50.56
SIZE 5.5’
MAG 8.9
Reasonably bright globular that concentrates to a bright core. No resolution visible.

NGC 6388 – GC – SCORPIUS
RA 17.36.17 DEC -44.44.06
SIZE 8.7’
MAG 6.7
At 166x it appeared as a moderately large and bright globular. Small bright core, had a rather grainy appearance but no resolution.

NGC 6496 – GC – SCORPIUS
RA 17.59.02 DEC -44.15.54
SIZE 6.9’
MAG 8.5
Rather faint and diffuse globular with a somewhat loose appearance and no real concentration. A couple of faint stars at edge.

NGC 6093 – GC – SCORPIUS
RA 16.17.03 DEC -22.58.30
SIZE 8.9’
MAG 7.3
Small core surrounded by a halo of partly resolved stars, but appeared hazy.

NGC 6266 – GC – OPHIUCHUS
RA 17.01.12 DEC -30.06.44
SIZE 14.1’
MAG 6.7
Very beautiful globular in a nice starfield. Nucleus bright, somewhat off-centre. Higher power starts to resolve surrounds that appear a bit nebulous.

NGC 5986 – GC – LUPUS
RA 15.46.03 DEC -37.47.10
SIZE 9.8’
MAG 7.5
Another bright and attractive object. Rather mottled appearance with a few stars resolves at edge. Bright core.

NGC 6584 – GC – TELESCOPIUM
RA 18.18.37 DEC -52.12.54
SIZE 7.9
MAG 8.6
Fairly bright globular, concentrating to an unresolved core. Some resolution around edges.

NGC 6397 – GC – ARA
RA 17.40.41 DEC -53.40.25
SIZE 25.7’
MAG 5.8
Beautiful, very bright globular with intense core with a large number of stars concentrating around it. Looked very impressive at higher powers.

NGC 6326 – PN – ARA
RA 17.20.46 DEC -51.45.15
SIZE 15” x 10”
MAG 12.0
This PN appear as nearly circular with a well defined shape. Quite easy to pick up even at moderate powers. No sign of a central star. Evenly illuminated and a fairly high surface brightness.

NGC 6300 – GX – ARA
RA 17.16.59 DEC -62.49.15
SIZE 6.0 x 4.0
MAG 11.0
Difficult to determine the shape of this irregular looking galaxy, it almost looked like a nebula. Slightly brighter core.

NGC 6215 – GX – ARA – Class ScIII
RA 16.51.06 DEC -58.59.32
SIZE 2.3’ x 2.0’
MAG 11.93
This galaxy appeared as a faint roundish haze in the same field as mag 3.8 Eta Ara. The star made it somewhat difficult to spot with the 22mm, but the 9mm picked it out easily. No real details visible from my location.

NGC 6221 – GX – ARA – Class ScII, Sy2
RA 16.52.46 DEC -59.13.08
SIZE 5.0’ x 3.2’
MAG 10.67
This galaxy was also not far from Eta Ara, and appeared as a fairly large roundish haze. Photos show 2 spiral arms in this Seyfert-type spiral, but I had real difficulty in seeing much detail from my location.

A very enjoyable session. Thanks for looking.

Sounds a very good night indeed Paul. So many globulars, so little time. I related to your struggle in seeing detail in the Ara galaxies - dark skies help, but there is still so much foreground stuff that I've found them to be quite challenging. Thanks for the report
