Importing Obsession Classic

I am considering importing an Obsession "Classic" model telescope that is made of timber (birch/maple ply), and am wondering whether that will be a problem. I wouldn't want to pay a lot, only to have Customs declare it a bio-hazard!

Has anyone else successfully imported an Obsession telescope?

Any tips appreciated!

I believe if it is properly sealed, and no obvious voids or worm holes etc, you'll be fine.

I imported firearms for about 10 years - all with wood stocks - never once a single issue in over several hundred firearms. I also imported stock sets - either old walnut, birch or beech, or many dozen German WW2 laminate beech stocks (and some reproduction modern UNFINISHED beech laminate from Poland).

If in doubt, ring AQIS and ask.

Yes - I imported mine direct from the manufacturer as did a friend with an 18". My mate Barry has bought a few similar scopes into Perth. There were absolutely no issues with the import, as long as you declare it.
Enjoy the views! Nothing beats aperture !

Hi Vello.

Importing an Obsession Classic is not a problem and Dave Kriege will
ensure that the right paperwork for Customs and AQIS accompanies
the import so that it will have swift passage.

DaveK has visited Australia on several occasions and there are quite
a few Obsessions in the country.

DaveK has exported thousands of Classics around the world and is
an experienced hand.

I volunteer with an organization that imported around half a dozen
Classics in one sea-freight shipment. A custom's broker can handle
all the paperwork for you.

Best Regards

The Telescope advertised on IIS classifieds is an 18" Ultracompact and he wants an 18" Classic. Having an 18" Classic myself and having spent a lot of time with an 18" Ultracompact I would be going for the 18" Classic also. While the 18" Ultracompact is a bit more portable, it has some downsides compared to the Classic IMO.
