My first with my new C5

One small step for man, one giant leap to a C5

I was recently bought a new gift to replace my 4se. I've stepped up an inch to a C5 tube. After modifying my mount to suit, then learning it's little idiosyncrasies, I'm pretty happy with my new toy

A good start Ryan.

Some detail and colour coming through.
Others might chip in on how to improve things.

I am no expert so can only give general advice.

Practise makes perfect!

Thank you Peter.

I have no doubt that longer and more exposures will help but as you said, I think it's a good start. I've kept the data this time which I've been guilty of getting rid of in the past so I may add to it down the track. Longer exposures is hard on an Alt-az but when I was modifying the mount, I also did a little bit of tuning which has helped with tracking 10 fold.

Onwards and upwards

Not bad at all. Focus is a little soft which is why you get more field curvature than usual but it's a very respectable first shot. Shows potential.

Hi Ken.

I was using the canon 5d. Currently it's attached to a universal t-adaptor while I'm waiting for my SCT t-adaptor to arrive. Given the 5d is full frame, it creates hideous vignetting which creates it's own problems. I'm aware that the C5 baffle is only 1 1/4 so I'm never going to get rid of that completely but the SCT adaptor has a larger diameter and is slightly shorter. The big plus with the 5d over the 350d is the pixel size so it is significantly more sensitive with my small tube and short exposure times.

I'm not sure if any of what I said applies to why you asked but I just thought I'd state that I'm aware of many of my limitations with my current setup. I'm always open to suggestions ....

Ryan,
Thanks.
Only asked to ensure readers knew which camera gave the results you obtained.
I agree, a promising outcome.

Thank you Marc

I agree with the focus. That's something else that seems to behave very differently ( much more sensitive ) than my previous OTA. I'm using a bahtinov mask to set my focus. One of my plans for improvement is to make a gear down for my focuser to make it easier to fine tune but any other suggestions are more than welcome.

Thank you again for the positive feedback

Stars are round which is good given the fl.
You should be pleased ..its looks great.
The more you do it the more good luck you will have.
Funny about focus ..mine was a little soft at one point last night and I could not be bothered doing a refocus..but it got colder and went to perhaps perfect focus☺

Thank you Alex.

As much as I'm learning heaps and applying it the best I can, I think sometimes it does take a little bit of luck on your side too for things to just work

That looks good Ryan,
I want to give the triffid neb a go more so now. I've got the 5 inch in the skywatcher mak cas slightly higher fl. Have gotten a bahtinov mask to help with having the right focus plus fitted a crayford dual speed to it. Will be heading outside tonight as long as the wind drops

Thank you Karl

Good luck with your session tonight. I look forward to seeing what you capture. Spend plenty of time getting that focus spot on and I'm sure you'll have something amazing to show
