Filters to suit light pollution of varying magnitude

Hi everyone,

I have been reading up on LP filters and came across the following article @ cloudy nights and noted that filters selection needs to be made depending on the VLMag.

Living in Westmead (Paramatta) I was wondering if any of you guys are taking astro photos and if so which filters are you using and whats your observations. These filters cost a fair amount and its worth hearing from the experts before I make a decision.

I'm tending towards the Hutech IDAS @ almost 300 dollars and would like to know if I can get anything cheaper or should I go narrowband with such high amount of LP in Sydney.

Let me know?

Regards

I thought I might also add the response lamps vs filtering to help with the decision for us citysiders from the pbase site

I use a CLS LP filter from Astronomik. I does the jobe but leaves you images very blue and had to process. I have recently started to use one of my flats as a custom white balance, and it works a treat. I bought a light box from one of the members here and use that to take my flats.

In my light polluted backyard I have used the 2" baader UHC-S. When I process my pics I have to be careful to offset the red back to the left in the histogram. I guess every filter affects your color balance and you have to take that into account in your processing flow. I've heard the Hutech IDAS LP filters are very good. I've never tried them myself.

Thanks for the response guys, I'm tending towards the Astronomik CLS clip filter for Canon50D. Having read up on the Hutech IDAS I get the feeling it won't be enough for my light polluted Para skies. The Astronomik seems to be more aggressive in blocking LP and more importantly cheaper.

Sandy - Have no idea what flats are maybe I need to start reading up on that too.

Flats are exposures timed to fill a third of the full well capacity of your camera chip. Divided into your light frames they get rid of vigneting (uneven illumination) and dust motes from your optics.
