The ToUCam grabs a partial lunar eclipse...

Hi all, here is my take on the partial lunar eclipse. I'm a little behind the rest of you because I first had to find time to merge all 12 panels of my ToUCam's 640x480 resolution...
However I'm quite happy with the result: http://www.pbase.com/rolfolsen/image/126032191/large

Image is taken @11:25pm NZST 26/06/2010 with 10" Newtonian and a 0.6x focal reducer. It is a mosaic of 12 panels from the ToUCam's 640x480 resolution. An IR block filter was added to ensure correct colour representation because I particularly wanted the reddening of the shadow to be visible.
Exposures of both 1/1250s, 1/1500s and 1/1000s were blended together to capture the full dynamic range of the partially eclipsed Moon. Each panel is a stack of 190 frames, which provided for low noise levels so the image could be processed with curves and sharpening in Photoshop.

I noticed something unusual after I had uploaded the image to PBase. My colour profiling seems to have gone out the window
Inside Photoshop the image looks fine, the transition from light to shadow is smooth, but the 'original' size image (http://www.pbase.com/rolfolsen/image/126032191/original) which I saved from Photoshop, looks much more contrasty and also a little more saturated. The transition to the shadow is very abrupt and ugly when I view it in Windows Picture Viewer and in Firefox. Interestingly enough, all the other sizes that PBase automatically generates (large, medium and small) are fine, in the browser they look exactly like my original in Photoshop?
Is anyone able to see this problem when looking at these images, and perhaps advise how I get the same colour profile in both Photoshop and Windows/browser?

Regards,
Rolf

A superb image Rolf, well worth the effort that must have gone into it.

Thank you Michael Stitching the Moon in 640x480 resolution is a bit of a pain, but I've never done an eclipse shot so I though it was about time

Thank you very much Tony, I'm also pleased with the result, it definitely turned out better than I expected.

Thanks David, glad you liked it

Do any of you see a difference in contrast at all between the two images:
http://www.pbase.com/rolfolsen/image/126032191/large
and
http://www.pbase.com/rolfolsen/image/126032191/original
?

I'm still trying to work out what my color calibration problem is. I still see a large difference in Windows but also had a look at the two images above in Linux and then there doesn't seem to be any difference... so maybe you guys see it differently from me as well

I can't really see any difference between the images on my work LCD, IE and XP. I will have to check at home on the CRT and Firefox, although the CRT is behaving strange lately, not really flickering but "vibrating"?

I have to pass comment on your choice of font, Papyrus is one of my favourites.

Thank you Tony, yeah I like Papyrus too. I stumbled upon it one day and thought it was awesome, it doesn't really look like other fonts and is very elegant I think.

I have found a solution for my color calibration problem. I went to Control Panel -> Color Management and changed the color profile to be the same as the one used in my Photoshop (sRGB IEC61966-2.1) and now images look the same both in Photoshop and in Windows Picture Viewer and IE/Firefox.
So in case anyone else has a similar problem some day, just make sure the color profiles are identical.

Thank you Rob, it is a bit of an effort with such a small chip but well worth it I think
