Also getting a spectrum to fit a Planck curve to needs a reasonable instrument response correction which can be tricky for the beginner to get to grips with (As Steven is finding currently) whereas temperature dependent features in the spectrum (like Balmer lines in hot A stars and molecular bands in cool M stars for example) are immediately apparent in the image of the spectrum without any processing at all.
