New Nikon D90 announced.

Following hot on the heels of Canon's announcement of the 50D, Nikon yesterday announcement yet another new DSLR model, the D90.

What makes this one special is it's ability to capture video, the first DSLR to have the ability, at 24fps HD with sound using any Nikkor lens attached to the camera.

It will be interesting to see how it performs up against the Canons especially for astro work but it does seem that Nikon is giving Canon a run for it's money lately.
Good !
Competition is a healthy thing and the consumer will benefit.

Movie mode will make it handy for those astro situations where one wants to capture footage of an event not just photos.

Nikon D90 Key Features
12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor
ISO 100-6400
HD720p video capture (w/ audio)
Face Detection System
3″ LCD 920,000 pixel resolution
11-point AF
96% viewfinder coverage
HDMI output

Anyway thought I'd share the news.

Certainly is.

I read somewhere that it's limited to 5 minutes but I don't know if that's accurate info.
Anyway it's interesting to see this ability emerge now in DSLRs.

Yeah - 5 minutes in 720px mode and 10 minutes in less.

I actually disliked the idea of video on a DSLR - I had the immediate impression that it cheapened the experience - an SLR is meant to be an SLR, nothing else. If you want video you buy a video camera.

I've since reconsidered and on the strength of the ability to swap lenses to suit the application at the time, it could now lend credibility to camera-based video that the compacts never really had.

Exactly... Video on a point and shoot is very limited due to the cheap lenses and digital zoom... imagine video with a 70-200 F/2.8 or a 300mm F/2.8 Could be a nice experience... Not to mention what you could do with a 10.5mm fisheye...

Alternatively, Planetary imaging may be possible through a telescope + DSLR now... It would be worth trying in any case...

video... that will make bird in flight shots very easy! just pinch a frame from a movie...
i can see definite benefits... bird watchers can make movies using thier 400mm + lens of behaviour... hmm... wonder how much it'll be?

Alex the problem with this video mode or most video modes on P&S camera's is that the compression would introduce artifacts into the image. You would be far better of with a MiniDV camera.
