Just like m42 with its core processing, just changing exposure to bring out detail. This is our bread and butter for good results. Its the way it is, its like saying is it cheating to use a dslr over a film roll camera.

As the technology gets better, there might be a camera that has a auto built in pixinsight adjustment all in one at the touch of a button save hours of work for later...pipe dream.

What you say with about better technology is quite correct, and a one frame exposure could do magic.
You have however have missed the point of the original question.
