With under 2 months until Xmas, now's the time to organise a quick, cheap and convenient gift for family, friends and more.

The Astronomy Calendar 2017 makes a great gift, and can be ordered online now at the IceInSpace Shop!

The Astronomy Calendar this year features the winning images from the “David Malin Awards 2016”, Australia’s premier photographic competition for amateur astronomers. The 12 images featured were the winners of the major categories, plus others that received honourable mentions.

The Astronomy Calendar 2017 provides a nightly guide to what’s visible in the sky, including moon phases, planetary positions, eclipses and meteor showers. The calendar features nightly moon phases and Monthly Star maps, plus a summary of the year indicating best time to view the planets. Size: 23 x 33cm, opening to 46 x 33cm.

* What's Super about November's Supermoon?

November's Full Moon (Nov 14th) is being labelled in the media as a "Supermoon" - something most astronomers really dislike, as a Supermoon simply refers to the Full Moon occurring at the same time as being closest to Earth in its slightly elliptical orbit.

There's all sorts of manipulated and photoshopped images of very large Moon's next to landmarks, but for the most part, it won't look any bigger to the naked eye. You'd really only be able to tell the difference using camera equipment to see the difference from previous Full Moons to this one.

However, if it does get people thinking about Astronomy, and if it does get them outside looking up at the sky, then I'm happy for it to be called a Supermoon, as long as it comes with the right explanations

There's a great article on EarthSky talking about the November Supermoon, with more comparison images, explanations and more. Point your family and friends to this great source if they ask about it.

* Images Reveal Crashed Mars Lander

The European Space Agency has tried hard to avoid using the words "crash" or "failure" about its attempted Mars landing but the fate of the spacecraft is cruelly exposed in new pictures.

The Schiaparelli lander is seen in greater detail than ever before, lying on the Martian surface.

It is well within its intended landing zone but obviously unable to function.

The images, gathered by Nasa, could provide important new clues about what went wrong.

* Inverted City Beneath the Clouds

How could that city be upside-down? The city, Chicago, was actually perfectly right-side up. The long shadows it projected onto nearby Lake Michigan near sunset, however, when seen in reflection, made the buildings appear inverted. This fascinating, puzzling, yet beautiful image was captured by a photographer in 2014 on an airplane on approach to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. The Sun can be seen both above and below the cloud deck, with the later reflected in the calm lake. As a bonus, if you look really closely -- and this is quite a challenge -- you can find another airplane in the image, likely also on approach to the same airport.
