Hey Col, we survived worse than that mate, we had eleven in the family, lived in Queensland then on a farm and only had tank water, remember all of us using the same bath water, I was lucky though I was the youngest so i went first.
Could tell you lots of horrid things we go up to and survived, just

Heck when I think back...we would smoke cane..the stuff you weave baskets with..we scored a cane chair from the tip which gave us cigar diameter smokes...wars to control the hill with bows and arrows and catapults, how no one was injured I don't know, canoes from iron sheets, rides the horses ( and cows) bare back...made gun powder and bolt bombs ..they admittedly took a few fingers off in our little town..at least three kids that I remember had accidents with them. Throwing knives..fighting most of the time cause that's what we did. And climbed trees. Later rifles ...and fireworks...cracker night was such fun...So many things that would not be tolerated these days.

It is true. Marble guns and diving off cliffs into shallow water. Various lethal home made contraptions , explosives and boats. Terrible accidents. I am glad I think that kids now have a bit more sense and know how to use protective gear. Fingers and eyes are hard to do without.
I had a .22 Webley air pistol. If you packed phosphorus from matches in the open end of the pellet it, left a spiral trail of smoke behind it when fired. If you fired the pellet with the open end facing front, no smoke, but made a lovely loud bang upon contact with a solid target such as a wooden gate, or a
metal dustbin.

I was a bit of a geek at school a friend and I were into chemistry etc we used to make nitro, gunpowder etc, you could buy the chemicals from Selbys back then even as a kid no ID needed

So true. I can relate to that. Only the stupid ones had missing digits though. It was natural selection by example. Mental note: what not to do
