Celestron "Cosmos Navigator" - SkySafari free?

Just noticed this on the Android Play Store.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...smos_navigator

Haven't installed it yet but judging by the screenshots it has exactly the same interface as SkySafari. Looks like it can even connect to a wifi scope, no idea if it is locked down to Celestrons wifi only.

Don't know if it is based on the old or v4 version of SkySafari, but for nix who can complain.

That's how much kids toys cost these days...
I groaned at the "Special Edition COSMOS badging with 3D Spaceship of the Imagination design on fork arm"

Yes, it looks exactly like SkySafari 4 Basic, with the addition of support for the Celestron Cosmos 90 GT telescope - but this is the ONLY telescope it can drive, apparently. (The Cosmos WiFi telescope broadcasts it's own WiFi network, and the app is limited to only work with this interface.) I would guess that SkySafari have done a cross-branding / licensing deal with Celestron and the Cosmos TV show.

If you have the Celestron Cosmos WiFi telescope, it would certainly be worth getting, or if you just want a good free planetarium app, but if you want a richer database, or you want to interface to ANY other telescope, SkySafari 4 Plus or Pro would be a much better bet.

Two posting from Southern Stars to the Yahoo group 15/Apr/2014:

Quote:
As some of you have noticed, the 4.0.5 build of SkySafari for iOS shows an option to connect to the scope using Celestron's SkyQ link. We have been working on this for Celestron for a different product, but they all share the same code base and some test code got inadvertently left on when building SkySafari 4.0.5.

This feature does not currently work, but it will before too long. Just ignore it for now and hopefully the next release will have it fully functional.

Celestron just announced at NEAF that a version of SkySafari will be used to control the Evolution. SkySafari Plus and Pro will also be getting that capability.
