Angry A timely reminder for old hands and newbies.

Check your settings before walking away from the camera ..... 3 times. Check your settings .... all of them! Cos you never know what you might have inadvertently/clicked clicked on. Like selecting 2x binning accidently in the autosave dialog box in Maxim.

15hrs (3 precious clear dark nights, 90 subs @10min ea) of M104 shot to hell. Only found out just now when I tried to process them in DSS.

And when you've checked your settings, check the fits header window of your first image before walking away.... jic!

Same applies to using DSLR ..... medium jpeg with BT mask still on. 2 hrs of M31 taught me that one a couple of years ago. Pity the lesson didn't transfer across.

I might do that Adam ... with a wall!!! I said a lot of words that aren't allowed here in IIS. I even made up a few new ones for myself.

I hear you though , but its never pleasant when it happens.

I usually start my profanities at the beginning of the alphabet and try to get through to 'Z' - usually run out of steam (and words!) around 'G'

Zebraskin fontima (I think that's how it spelt) Picked up from a Sci-fi book (can't remember which one) Thick headed lumber beast that has trouble distinguishing between rocks and vegetation to eat.

oh dear
Well, you have even better skies tonight and for the next few nights.
Get out there and give it another go.
I double checked my settings on the camera just before. I think I'll nip out and check one more time.

Gee, that's no good.

I know I can be very **** about checking my settings, so much so my mate laughs at me, but after you've pulled a few clangers it sticks.

Can you not take some binned calibration frames or doesn't the DSLR work like that?

This is with my SX-M25C and unfortunately by binning, it looses the colour information (or so I'm told). I thought about trying to drizzle them when stacking and then apply the bayer info but I'd loose resolution by up-scaling it x2, so I'll just ditch them, start again and put it down to the big E. ..... Experience

Close Paul. Creatures called Zabriskan fontema appear in Doc Smith's "First Lensman".

"... The thing was certainly alive; it throbbed and vibrated with vitality: equally certainly, it was not very intelligent. But it had a definite consciousness of its own existence; and therefore, however tiny and primitive, a mind. Although its rudimentary ego could neither receive nor transmit thought, it knew that it was a fontema, that it must roll and roll and roll, endlessly, that by virtue of determined rolling its species would continue and would increase."

Commiserations Paul!!! To lose clear weather dark nights is a tragedy.

Mistakes like this are only just a matter of time for everyone. So far mine have only been mislabeling, rather than incorrect captures. I wrote down my "acquisition workflow" recently, with the idea of using it as a checklist. I meant to type it up, laminate it and stick it on the desk at Leyburn - might get off my freckle and do it after hearing of your misfortune.

Thanks Andrew. Great series too. (I had it for years (all the E. E. Doc Smith books until my ex decided they'd bring a pretty penny at the second hand book shop) As usual I've got my Zabriskan fontema mixed up with something else, but I like your version better.

Oh and btw ... I've had flexure tonight AND in my frustration I forgot to check focus. That makes a total of 102 x 10 min images of M104 I've fontemaed this week alone. Not a bad record really

Egad. You let her sell ALL your E.E. Doc Smith novels?! What were you thinking Paul!
Are you sure you can't salvage a decent M104 out of the binned data? That's at least better than the night I shot green subs all night because I didn't wire the filter wheel up correctly

Sure you cant use the 2x2 binned subs ?

Its quite normal to 2x2 bin the RGB and just do L at 1x1
If so, it may just mean you need to reacquire the L's but not everything else.

I don't think so Rally. If could probably upsize and get the bayer matrix colours right, I'm still down on resolution. They're still sitting in the recycle bin so if I get some time I might pull them out and see how it goes. If I can get it I could use what I'm doing now as a false Lum and then add them as a chromiance (?). not sure if that's a word or not I'll see how I go.

I would silv, but unfortunately half the letters I used in the words don't appear on a standard keyboard
