My next DSLR. Which model?

Having only ever owned Canon 350D's, I am thinking of venturing into a DSLR with live view. In my price range are the 1000D and the 450D.

The small concern I have on both is that unlike my previous 350D's, the 450D and 1000D only have SD card capability, not CF cards. Do any owners of these models have any issues with the SD cards? access speed etc?

I recommend you the 450D over the 1000D.
No problem with SD cards they are fine.

Thanks for your reply Luis. I am looking at either the 450D (AUD$869) or 500D (AUD$1049). The difference in pixels is not a concern. The main difference for me as a user will be 920k pixels on the screen of the 500D, compared to the 230k on the 450D. In the end can I justify $200 more for the convenience of being able to (perhaps) gain better focus with a higher resolution screen?

I am leaning towards the 450D. Any users of the 450D, feel free to jump in here with any opinions. I plan to use this for terrestrial, and AP (tripod, eq6 widefield shots etc).

BTW, the above prices are from Camera Action. Anyone know of other Canon retailers who are competitive?

I have bought from D-D-Photographics in North Sydney several times as they carry stock, and their prices are very good, though some items have just gone up by 10-20% in the last couple of days.

Cheers,
Jason.

re 450D

Hi

I have the 450D,had it a year, its a great camera, never had any issues with it or SD cards, very happy with both, would highly recommend it over the 1000D/

However in your position, the 550D is well worth considering, for an extra $200,go for it!,apparently its been said its basically a 7D in a cheaper body.

Heres a pic I took with 450D yesterday, hope this helps. Chris

Chris, that's a beauty of a shot

Yeah, I've pretty much ruled a line through the 1000D on my list. I did find some great information on the Canon EOS series on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...igital_Cameras

Can't stretch the budget to a 550D, I'm afraid, Chris (or did you mean to say 500D instead of 550D?)

I have lenses already so I only need to purchase a body:

450D body - Teds: $745...... Camera Action: $739
500D body - Teds: $955...... Camera Action: $959

Cheers Jason, I checked out D-D-Photographics in Sydney, and their prices a definately less than, say Ted's or Camera Action. They appear to be a similar setup to another company Digital Rev whom I have bought from in the past.

I am unsure about their warranty arrangement. I know that with Digital Rev, you can only send the camera back to them for warranty repairs. I know a lot of thier stock is ex. Hong Kong. Again, I'm assuming that D-D-Photographics works the same way.

The feature which will be very handy is the Live view with the 3" screen. I notice there is a big difference in the resolution between the 450D and the 500D.

mmmm.... decisions, decisions....

I bought a 550D last week - speaking to the camera guy, the 550 will be much better at high ISO in terms of noise than the 500.

Although for AP the smaller pixel size (4.5 micron) can be problematic - so I hear....?

re camera

Stephen,I did mean the 550D,I just checked the price $1025 from DDP Bris/Syd.

It was alittle dearer than I thought, and possibly out of the budget range.
the 500D was $869 and the 50D was $939.

I could not see a price for the 450D on DDP website,I checked DWI they had 450D $599AUD(hong kong)bear in mind add $60 postage, plus 2% for card charge,So say $680 to your door.I have bought of them they sent the camera body and arrived within 70 hours.

I take from your post you have around $750ish dollars? if its at all possible to try and get that 50D from DDP in Bris or Syd,try for that over the 450D,I have both,I just got the 50D,its more a pro camera over the 450D and you will be better off spending the extra $200,However the 450D I am not getting rid off,its very good and light.

Hope this has'nt confussed you even more,Chris

The higher you can go the better.
The 500D is better than the 450D the display is gorgeous, and a pleasure to focus using live-view.
But if you can reach for a 550D then you'll have an amazing sensor in terms of noise and resolution. The 550D has the same sensor as the 7D. It's also fantastic for filming if you like video. It's a 7D without the steroids.

Thanks guys, I pretty much narrowed it down to the 550D or the 50D. Gut feeling is to go for the 550D. I need to digest some more specs before I decide.

Stephen,

If it's down to the 50D or a 550D, then, your choice will primarily be influenced by the ergonomics of the body.

The 50D is in-between the xxxD series of bodies and the 7-/5D series of bodies.

The 550D is an 18 megapixel system compared to a 15.1 megapixel system of the 50D. Much of a muchness, really.

Both the same sensor size, same ISO capabilities.

50D will have better focusing abilities owing to its cross-type sensor focus point, it also has one stop faster shutter speed (1/8000th).

The 550D has greater exposure latitude with +/- 5 EV compared to +/- 2 EV.

If you're going to be using the camera for sports or for capturing action, then, the 50D is better suited at 6.3 FPS, compared to 3.7 FPS.

If you're interested in making video, then the 550D has video capability.

As mentioned earlier, the 550D has a gorgeous preview screen. But, then, is this really all that important?

Lastly, the 550D is about 30% lighter in terms of weight.

My money would be on the 50D due to its feel in my hands. The print quality would be very, very similar out of both systems.

Bugger of a decision, Stephen. Good luck.

H
