New Canon 1000D

Canon just launched the new 1000D to replace the 400D. You can pre-order with Ted's the kit package for $999.95. Will arrive late Aug. What do you think of it guys? 10 mega pixels with live view focusing.

I mentioned the 1000D a few daze ago in a post.

As far as I know, it's not a replacement for the 400D - it's a step down.

It's cheaper, lighter (more plastic) and has lower specs all round.

Canon makes 4 series of SLR cameras:

- the unit-series, such as the film EOS 1 and EOS 3, and the digital EOS 1D and EOS 5D. These are the 'pro' cameras $3500 - $12,000.

- the tens-series - the digital EOS 40D is the only current one at the moment and these are the semi-pro/serious amateur cameras - $1500 (Cripes! I paid $2500 a year ago! The price drops means the new 45D? 50D? is on it's way...). In the past there have been others (30D etc) as well as film cameras (EOS 30, EOS 33 etc)

- the 100-series - the 450D, the film EOS 300 etc The normal amateur range - $500 - $1200

- the 1000-series - the film EOS 3000 ($200), which is little more than a plastic semi-disposable SLR. The 1000D is in this category.

Having said all that, give it 6 or 12 months until the price drops by a half and I might get one myself as a spare camera that I won't mind dropping onto concrete or leaving in the car... - I ain't gunna do that with my 40D!!!

Have a look at http://www.dpreview.com/previews/Canon_1000D/

Oh how I would love to do some photography like that... but yeah, no way am I hanging any of my DSLR's off the side of my car....
MAYBE the D50.... but probably not.. in the case of the D50 its not the camera that worries me, its the glass hanging off the front of it

if it did come down, I'd be tempted to get it and mod it for astro. be good to have something lighter than the 40D on the end of the scope...and I love my 40d too much to mutilate it

The 1000D is a direct replacement for the 400D which is being dropped by Canon, the 1000D is a slightly watered down 450D, apart from the 7 point focusng against the 400 & 450D 9 the 1000D is far better camera than the 400D

The 450D is a replacement for the 400D which was a replacement for the 350D and so on..

The ranges are

300D, 350D, 400D, 450D

10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D

5D, 5D mark II

1D range

The 1000D is at a different price point and frankly I dont think it is worth not spending the extra 100 bucks to get a 450D. The 400D is superceded and second hand would be better value than a 1000D.

Cheer
Paul

Everyone has there own view
But for strictly astro use the 1000D takes some beating the only gain point with the 450D is its 14bit over the 1000D which is 12 bit.

yeah.. but 14bit vs 12bit is a pretty substantial hit when astro imaging...
