Electric Blue - Vela SNR

Sometimes known as the Bow-Tie or Moustache Nebula this beautiful shockwave of glowing filaments of Ionised Oxygen overlaps the Hydrogen Alpha rich Gum nebula region.

At this orientation it resembles cosmic butterfly wings.

Surprisingly, there's not too many images of this lovely piece of the SNR about - although Mike Sidonio & Don Goldman have done their own amazing versions.
I'll be revisiting this with my little SV70t Refractor soon, to get a wide FOV of this field - stay tuned!

Within the Eastern section of the Vela Supernova Remnant, the expanding debris cloud is from the death explosion of a massive star. Light from the supernova explosion that created the Vela remnant reached Earth about 11,000 years ago. In addition to the shocked filaments of glowing gas, the cosmic catastrophe also left behind an incredibly dense, rotating stellar core, the Vela Pulsar. Some 800 light-years distant, the Vela remnant is likely embedded in a larger and older supernova remnant, the Gum Nebula. (text: Apod)

Wow - I just saw this on nightscape Photographers on facebook - came here for some more info. Stunning image. Reminds me of the opening scene of Star Trek Voyager.

Interesting framing Andy, looks pretty cool and the contrasting colours are very nice too. Looks best when it is all on the screen together as one scene close up, not as good.

I like the see-through look to the OIII, well done.

Mike

Cheers Mike- I was keen to maintain the gaseous appearance, seems to have worked ok. I’m looking forward to imaging this region again!

Wonderful feeling of a piece of transparent diaphanous cloth floating against a starry background. Beautiful and different.

I like this one Andy, colour is rich and the framing is quite nice.

I must revisit this nebula again once I have AG2 going with a larger sensor. Last time I was using my FSQ and a QSI.

Cheers M&T, Alan, Chris, Paul, Graham, Tim & Bart - really appreciate and welcome your nice feedback!

Very eloquently put M&T "transparent diaphanous cloth floating against a starry background."

I'm currently re-visiting this region with my widefield 'scope - if the weather co-operates, I will be able to show more of this beautiful nebula in context with it's surroundings.
Thanks again everyone!
