Awesome - Paracorr arrived today

Finally got hold of the long awaited Paracorr today, have given it a quick try on the dob and I'm pleased to announce that I can easily achieve focus using my 400D and 10" f5 Newt.

This opens up a whole new set of possibilities for imaging - can now use the 400D and DSI II on both optical tubes. I'm thinking Centaurus A with the 10" and 400D is going to be the first target when the weather settles down up here.

Also pleased to report I've finally cracked 1000 posts

Great news there, so have you modified that 10" f5 newt for the DSLR to reach focus or is the Paracorr sufficient?

As I understand it, the paracorr is enough to bring a DSLR to focus in a 10" F/5 newt...

Peter, Fantastic news mate! I look forward to seeing a bit more sky around your targets!

Congrats mate!

Michael,

I've moved the mirror forward about 10 mm on longer collimation screws (to achieve focus with my DSI II and filter wheel) however there is close to 13 mm inward travel left on the focuser with the 400D/Paracorr so I could probably achieve focus on the original setup with this combination.

Thanks Alex - I think I've read somewhere that the Paracorr is meant to give you the equivalent of about 10mm extra inward focus travel.

That sounds about right Peter.. On my 8" F/6 newt that I used to have, I was about 5mm shy of getting focus with my 350D, using a mates paracorr I was able to focus with, yeah say 5mm of spare inward focus travel to play with.. Now, We have to do some sort of, Anti-Rain Dance and get some quality imaging time in over this new moon weekend!

Alex.

Have you looked outside? I'm wishing I set up tonight - it's looking sensational out there at the moment.

mmm I was looking at that about 10 minutes ago mate... Does look stunning, however when you start work at 5:30am tomorrow.. the only thing that sounds better than a few hours of blissful imaging is perhaps sleep!

Roll on tomorrow night I say! I'll be out with bells on tomorrow night.. Probably at a dark site too.. Weather permitting.

Hmm - I expected this was going to be a Troy thread at first - king of AWESOME

Glad to hear you've got focus on the Newt Peter. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with the new options.

Agreed tonight looks amazing - shame its a "school night" though..... (actually, I think I'm still catching up sleep from last Sat night!)

Bah... im past last saturday night... I didnt get to bed untill 5am last saturday, this time around im thinking it might be even later if. IF
1. the weather stays nice
2. the dew point is low enough
3. everything goes according to plan..

Im thinking I might strike it lucky on one of those things.. probably the low dew point, but it'll be bucketing rain and my computer wont start

The title of your post just drew me to it for some reason...

Good news on it finally arriving. I know you've been hanging for it. With our recent purchases, we've both doomed Brisbane's weather for a bit, eh?

Tonight is looking promising although I've volunteered to go along to a school astro night - wonder if the school kids will mind looking at the back of my 400D in the focuser rather than looking through the eyepiece?

Alex,
I reckon we're in for some serious dew.
