Ao-x

I've been waiting about four years for this baby to arrive. The UPS man obliged yesterday

Now I can adaptively guide my KAF 16803 sensor

...something you just can't do with any other 16803 based CCD..
..might be time to put the RC back on the mount

What filter wheel is that Peter? Is it a STXL self-guider?

No, it's the FW5-STX.... a bit of a monster due the 65mm filters, and a not self-guiding CFW as a result.

The guide chip is in the camera head, co-planar with the imaging CCD.

The AO-X will be great for L frames...but admittedly not so good for say, H-alpha in this configuration.

The 11002/6803 STXL self-guide CFW's are more compact, and are unaffected by filter selection.

I am curious about this unit. I read the press release from SBIG about it and I got the idea from that it will outperform earlier AO units. Is that the expected performance?

I assume it needs an STXL or STX camera to use it as it works through the cameras' electronics to control the mount?

It looks like a very nice unit and I'd love to see the results before and after at long focal length as well.

I asked because the SBIG site suggests that you need an OAG and remote guide to use the new AO unit with the STX. Am I missing something?

Its going to be hard to top this if/when its all working on the RHA.
Perhaps in another 10yrs the neighbours will see AO lasers going up vertically from Barden Ridge would be the next step up?

The AO-X is a new large aperture AO for the STX and STXL cameras. It requires the FW8G-STXL Filter Wheel or STT-STXL Remote Guide Head and OAG to operate the AO-8X.

I can see why this might be confusing.

All you need is a second, *camera driven* guide chip. This can be:

STX in camera or remote head
STXL on CFW or remote head
STT on CFW or remote head.

Hope that clears thing up.

Differential guiding will be the next release from the SBIG "skunk-works" .....
...as for deformable optics and Watt-output-class sodium lasers....

P.S.
I actually have a Class 4 laser...suffice to say I treat it with a good deal of respect after having had a vision scare with it once (trust me that's enough.. )

...and, as an example: given what apparently "licensed" drivers currently do, I don't think the world general population is ready for Class 4 lasers just yet....

OK on the review. It is possible..with a MMOAG and RGH.... pre-filter AO guiding will work....but back-focus may be a nightmare.

AO is autonomous to the mount. The camera head (read: STX STXL )does indeed control it, but can also "bump" the mount once a user defined level of AO deflection is detected. Pretty clever stuff really.
