DBK vs DMK

Has anyone out there produced any planetary shots with both cameras, shooting the same thing and can upload there pics to share. Many reason for asking is I want to see what the quality difference is between the two.

Hi Peter,

Due to seeing conditions varying all the time even if someone took a avi with the DBK and then emmediately with the DMK it wouldn't be a fair test.

It would have to be done with two identical scopes at the same place at the same time, and to my knowledge this hasn't been done yet.

Perhaps at a star party where there are many gathering at the same place, it may be a chance to do this.

But ultimately the mono would get the better results? Detail and contrast.

Hi Peter

Yes, the mono will get better results. It will give you more resolution and better sensitivity in the individual colour channels.

The DBK is great for those that don't want the hassle of RGB Imaging, but ultimately you'll want to go mono if you want to get the very best results from your setup.

Hi Peter,

I have pointed both my DMK21 and DBK21 at Jupiter and (colourful) Double Stars. In terms of signal/noise ratio as related to image quality (IQ), what I have noticed is that the DBK requires a significantly higher gain setting to achieve similar exposures. This in itself can compromise IQ if you are limited to the number of frames you can capture due to e.g. Jupiter's rapid rotation.

In terms of sensitivity, the DBK doesn’t have the capability to record some fainter doubles so I have to remove it and plug in the DMK.

I guess this isn’t really surprising as the DMK mono chips soaks up the maximum amount of photons whereas the RGB Bayer matrix would make the DBK less efficient?

Cheers

Dennis
