Looking for infrared camera (for pointing at people)

Hi all,

I am trying to track down an affordable infrared / thermal camera I can use in my portable planetarium (on programs about the electromagnetic spectrum).

My googling online has only come up with cameras with a build in screen. Is anyone aware of a low end (i.e. affordable) ccd/cmos camera that I could put a visible light blocking filter on?

I basically want it to point at school students so they can see themselves at infrared wavelengths? Ideally, I would find one that will plug into my computer/data projector so the whole class can see the image (projected on the dome).

Regards,

Paul Floyd.

Paul, are you talking about doing this in the dark, or in daylight?

If doing it in the dark, most camcorders will give infrared performance
if you use an IR illuminator. This can be as simple as a torch with some
exposed and developed colour 35mm film, such as the black bits at the
end of your negatives. I haven't checked, but you can probably buy IR
filter for such purposes on Ebay.

I'd be suprised if you couldn't get the same results from a webcam or
cctv camera.

Cheers,
Jason.

Want to detect body heat

The idea is that students can see what heat their bodies give off. For instance their nose will be colder than the rest of their face.

Paul, You are talking about a "Thermal Imaging Camera". These usually work in the 8-14 Micron band. The lense will usually be made from Germanium and is Gold in appearance.

I don't think you will find a cheap one, but you might talk to your city
Fire Department as they use them to see through smoke. The camera usually has a built in viewing screen, and some also have a Video Out socket to run a lead to an external monitor.

This type of camera is also available for hire for industrial use such as looking at the heat loss from buildings or other objects.

I've been looking for roughly the same thing to record the doings of the wildlife at night and checking the livestock.
As 'mikerr', points out "Thermal Imaging" and "Cheap", don't really go hand-in-hand!

Try here tho':

Guys
This may be more applicable to Peter, but have a look at www.guardcam.com.au

At $449 it may suit and be in the price range.

Yep!

The one on the left is right. :-)

Unfortunately I am going to have to put the idea to one side for the time being as being too expensive. $1,500 seems to be the cheapest that I can find a thermal imager for. :-(

Regards,

Paul Floyd.
