' Dodgy Focuser '

The 2 x speed focuser on my WO Scope was not the best in operation.
So....I decided to investigate and disassembled it.

I found the ' brass ' bearing holder shaft was crossed threaded at the top and the ' tiny bearings ' were dry and ' pitted ' .

No wonder it ' felt ' like a gravel pit when first using it.

Apparently these were not the best of the early WO Focuser ( reports on CN about them ) ....either very poor QC / or ....it was ' fiddled ' with ( cross thread on shaft ) at some stage of it's life.

I have removed it ( the whole lot ) and replaced it with a better focuser pinion shaft ( only single speed now ) ...but is 1,000 % smoother and much nicer in operation.

I'm a fussy person, but I like things to be ' right ' ... even if it means spending money to fix it...although this time it was fixed with ' spare parts ' from my Astro' Bits and Pieces, I ' never ' throw things away, because sometime down the road ( as in this case )...it all came together nicely.

I had a similar issue, I believe it was over tightened and the result was some quite horrible adjustment. I too removed the 10:1 and left it as a single although I connected an auto focuser to mine directly and it is a whole lot better.
