Gmail via IPad

I normally access my gmail via my home PC. I would like to temporarily access the same gmail address via my IPad to receive and send emails when travelling.
Is there a simple secure way of doing this? Various methods are suggested on the Net but I get lost in the complexity.

Hi Peter,

On your iPad, you might want to access the App Store and download the
official "Gmail - Email by Google" app by Google, Inc. and use it.

Hi Gary
Thanks.
Have just tried the app but it gets me onto the old Google razzle-dazzle.
Having put in my .gmail email address it then tells me that it is invalid and then asks me for a password which I do not have! It then goes to the beginning and so on around the Google circle. Any suggestions?
Peter

Peter,
I regularly use gmail on my wife’s iPad....
Just use your “normal” gmail account and your usual password.

The builtin mail app in iOS can also use Gmail.
Just use the builtin setting to add a Google mail account with your Google id + password.
Sometimes you get a whining mail from Google 'someone is using a new device with your Google account' but ignore this because it is you in this case.

Thanks for this further advice. I think that Ken's method is close to what I hoped I would achieve. When I tried the app it kept asking for my Google account and password which is apparently different from my "normal" gmail Account Name (my full gmail address) and my chosen password.

So Ken I would appreciate your advice on the steps I should take to implement your method.

Also, in the past I was able to use my email on the IPad when I was on the now defunct Three network. My wife complained about my incoming emails (which are pretty voluminous) always appearing on the IPad. I only want to make use of this facility when I am away from home. So can I easily turn the IPad gmail on and off so that all gmail does not accumulate on the IPad?

Peter,
I'm just using my "normal" gmail login - my gmail email address and entering the Google password.....nothing more complicated than that.
If pain persists I'll double check the email details on the iPad for you.
Edit: It appears I'm not using the Gmail App. Under settings, mail, I have gmail set-up as a SMTP server (smtp.gmail.com)

I use gmail as a webmail access in the browser. No need to download anything, access it from anywhere, any device.

Thanks for this further advice. A further try to use gmail on my IPad resulted in the usual Google runaround.

I am trying to use my "normal" gmail password but I notice that you refer to a Google password - is this different?

Ken - sorry for the bother but I would appreciate if you could give me a step by step outline of how you use gmail on your IPad.

Peter

Peter,
It was a Private message here on the IIS...

Sounds like, for whatever reason Google didn't like your password an after so many tries locks you out.

Anyway, read the PM and respond.
