Away from the lights

Packed the car and headed out to a darker site half an hour from home. A blanket of smoke haze had drifted over from nearby bushfires but I took a risk because I planned to target objects high in the sky.

Revisited NGC 2997 (32 x 90 second subs) and finished off with a quick shot of flavour of the month NGC 3293 (3 x 90 second subs) as high cloud started to roll in. Both shots were taken unguided at 1600iso on the HEQ5pro mount with a modded Canon 550d connected to an f5 8 inch Newtonian.

That’s an incredible image of the Gem cluster with less than 5 minutes of data
Mine had over an hour of data and exposed less detail than yours with my 6” newt and unmodded 600D
Your modded camera obviously really works well in dark sites 👍

Thanks guys, glad you liked them. I'm finally getting to figure out a workflow in DSS, PS and recently StarTools that works in helping me achieve consistent results in regard to star colour and noise reduction. It's a bit tedious but the final result makes it worth the effort.

Top work Mick, dark skies make all the difference that’s for sure. I’m at Phillip Island at the minute- man the skies are awesome here...

Good work Mick, but the saturation is a bit over the top for my taste.
