One remote, two cameras.

Can I set off an off camera flash with the remote?

I want to get my flash off the camera and I think I have the gear, I just can't get it to work.

I have:
5Dmk II
580 EX II Speedlite
400D (Rebel xti)
Two Tripods
One Canon Remote RC-5

I want to mount the flash off to the side while I take portraits with the 5DMK II

I also have the MT-24 EX Twin Macro Lite is this any good in the mix?

Baz.

Baz, you can't achieve off camera flash with your existing gear. The only way to trigger a flash off camera on the 5Dii is via an extension cord or a flash trigger, canon make one I think it's an St-2 or something like that. Alternatively you can use a second 430 or 580 ex on camera as a trigger, the two can communicate wirelessly and the flash on camera can trigger without firing. There are also some aftermarket wireless triggers, the cheaper models don't support the ETTL functionality, the ones that do cost more than a second flash. I bought a second flash, the Nissin DI-866 to act as both a second flash and trigger. The DI-866 will cost about half of the 580EX and only a few $ more than the ST-2.
FWIW the 7D has inbuilt wireless trigger.

It just sucks that such an expensive and prestigious camera as the 5D MK II would not wirelessly speak to Canon's own top of the line flash. Just stupid really. Oh well.....

Thanks Phil. Upon further investigation, I think I am going to invest in a couple of pocket wizards.

Actually you can use the MT-24EX as a master and the 580EXII as a slave. It's a little unreliable in direct/bright sunlight, and they need to be in direct line of sight with each other. Not really practical, though, for portrait.

I'd suggest you investigate thoroughly before buying Pocket Wizards. They are the "gold standard", but there are quite a few cheaper alternatives that would be more than adequate for your purposes. As always, I'll point you to the flash/lighting section of POTN and also refer you to strobist.com Predicatable, aren't I.

Baz, I agree with Troy, don't forget that you can get a nissin Di-866 for under $300, a lot less than pocket wizards plus you then have a second flash which can double as trigger only if you wish. FWIW discount digital are advertising some ettl remote triggers "Soon" at a good price.

Thought you might be interested in this. Just read this post on Strobist about a new, very cheap, powerful flash that may interest you. You could get several of these for the price of one 580EXII!

There's also the Lumopro 160:

(I have a couple of the predecessor Lumopro 120)

And of course the Nissin Di866 I've previously reviewed here.
