Used it before in film days and recently (2y ago). Prefer to do it with digital - more control on the result.

Looong ago I did - a few eclipses, comets, moon/planets through a C8, a few DSO using a 6”f/5, and some widefields piggyback on top of scope... much of it on ektachrome and some black & white...

... but there’s no going back, imho film is well and truly dead. Long guiding for each shot makes significant demands on the scope and mount... reciprocity failure...

I think it might be a worthwhile experience for kids to play with to learn the basics of the the chemistry involved from taking an image to printing it, but not for anything serious.

I don't think any of the local stores around here stock film any more, but then again I haven't exactly looked.

Used it some time ago especially Hypered TP2415 film with an ISO of just 25 that came frozen from a place close to Canberra, cant quite remember the actual town.
It was posted with dry ice and keep in the freezer until one wanted to use it.
It practically had no grain to speak of and one could enlarge to any size, beautiful stuff, however since then i used Ilford HP400.
and all those films are still available as are plenty of others.

Not recently though, at least one did not have to worry about noise from a hot camera

Plenty of good photography outlets stock film, chemicals to process those films plus paper to print on Lewis if one knows where to look.
Ilford was my favorite products

My only recent use of film was several years back , i took my camera down to minnie waters , dragged it down the beach in the wee hours to get some shots of a comet (cant remember which ), i recorded the settings and exposure times on all of the 12 or so shots , when it was developed someone decided those 12 shots likley because they were quite dim and really just had a smudge across them wernt anything to look at and ditched all the negs .As much as i like film the reliance on others through the process takes the shine off a bit .

Graham - that reminds me - back in the day that I used to use film for star trails etc, I would tell the developer to PRINT ALL PHOTOS AND SUPPLY NEGATIVES. I learnt the hard way like you

Digital simplicity far outweighs my curiosity these days Leon.

I guess part of the problem is some film stocks need differant chemistry to process and have to be sent away which was my case further removing any input from the user , Me and the guy at the camera store knew what should of happened but unfortunately not much you can do .

Hmm, last time I used film was in the 1990's. Wouldn't even dream of doing it now. I processed all my own slides and colour film, printed my B&W stuff. The only thing I sent away was the colour prints because we could not afford a colour projector.

I tried it for a short time with colour slide film and a Canon AE1.

I used to take the film to the local chemist and monitor him processing the film so the results were not too dark.
At home I would stack the slides together before displaying them on my projector. Only ever did M42, Eta Carina and Omega Centaurus in 10 sec subs.

This was using my 12.5" f5.6 telescope on the horseshoe tracking mount (my avatar).

I'm not a living in the past person but I think there is a place for everything for example people collect and use 50+ year old scopes, old motorbikes, vinyl has, not is, has made a comeback, you can again buy NEW typewriters

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-Ty.../dp/B01L9CLEDY

Film has made a return and film camera, large format to 35mm have never gone away

Why are you asking? Are you about to embark on a film astrophotography blog? Sounds interesting...

No Sir, the "Images" section, they'll do nicely there.

I think that as I never ever did any imaging on film like most, digital, I would like to try, just the Moon, I'll develop and scan them and then post

I have thought about giving it a go again for nostalgia reasons. With auto guiders 1 hr subs would not be an issue, much easier than hand guiding with an illuminated recticle eyepiece.

I still have my old SLR from the film days. I use the old lenses with the DSLR for wide field, much better than the stock plastic ones that come in the camera package.

I occasionally use an empty film canister (black Kodak, not clear Fuji) with a whole at the bottom for aligning secondary mirrors in Newts. Does that count?
