ZWO ASI224MC for guide camera?

HI all,

For the last year I've been using a ProStar LP-Guide Mono for my guide camera, and it's been pretty good, but I do have a couple of issues with it.
  • I'd prefer a OSC camera, to try some planetary shots
  • The ProStars don't work on my Linux box (this is the biggest issue)

My current plan is to sell the ProStar and get a ZWO ASI224MC. I hear its a good performer for planetary shots. Can anyone confirm/deny this? Also, is it a good one for guiding (which is what I will use it for mostly)? And the biggest question, does it support Linux well? I would love to be able to get rid on my windows VM if I can.

Joe, I've been using one as a planetary and guide cam for almost 3 years, works like a charm. The 224 is very sensitive.

Earlier this year I bought a 290MM and that probably has a slight edge from a guide cam point of view, but it's not by a lot. And it's not like it's improved my guiding

Couldn't tell you about Linux...check ZWO support forum. IIRC they do push out their SDK regularly, so it's entirely possible.

Thanks Dunk,
I've been emailing ZWO support today about the OS compatibility and they've assured me that it works perfectly in Linux. It would still be nice to hear from someone that actually uses it just to make sure.
What was the reason you bought the 290MM? The people I have been emailing mentioned that one for guiding because it's more sensitive, but if you say its only slightly better, then its not worth the extra AUD$200 I think.
