That’s not a knife...this is a knife

A dear friend returned from Finland recently with a birthday gift (early - not til September) for me - a bespoke, named Marttiini Puukko - a traditional Finnish knife (hunting, fishing, other uses in wartime). Spalted curly Karelian birch...love that wood!

Razor sharp doesn’t come close - it’s fearsome putting it even near your skin

Enormous thanks to Kunama

Very nice present. Traditional Finnish knives are aesthetically pleasing and practical.

I think they usually layer the birch...like you cut multiple "washers" from birch bark and stack them on the tang and these are tightened down and shaped and finished.
But your knife looks very nice Lewis it would be a shame to use it really.
I missed a great opportunity to possibly get another nice knife as there was a Viking day at Lismore recently which I missed but the photos I was shown of the wares available that day showed what seemed to be some excellent hand made knifes...next year I will make a point to go and see if there is anything worth adding to my collection.

I prefer the solid birch ones to the layered bark ones Alex.

No it won’t get used

Made a hook and hung it up with my bayonets (Left to right: Swiss Dolchbajonett 1899, Swiss Dolchbajonett 1918, a Swedish m/1896, the Puukko, and a Russian 91/30)

You’ve got some very nice steel there Lewis,
I’ve got a modern variation of the traditional Puukko designed by Finnish knifemaker Pekka Tuominen.
A super sharp slicer with a full flat grind and micro bevel.

That's just what I have on display

My Grandpa's souvenired Katana...original early Swiss army knives, French Opinels (my do-it-all knifes), more bayonets...plus my damascus chef knives (plus the good old Trident).

Then there are the rifles...but that isn't discussed here

As a matter of interest, I happened upon a knife shop in Hahndorf (S.A.) and found they carried a great range of craftsman-made knives of all shapes and sizes.

Actually looks like a cheese knife
It’ll cut through the hardest cheddar with the greatest of ease!

Lovely knife there Lewis.

You could use it as a pruning knife Colin - but it might amputate your pushing thumb
