It looks like something that could be useful for self-defence (to knock somebody down).

It is well known that Martian's have very low standards of personal hygiene. They just wipe their hands on their clothes. Why we want to go there is beyond me.

I think that flat rock on the right is a serviette.
At any rate if it is not really a close-up those chickens must be pretty big - which of course means Martians are even bigger.
[PS: Maybe those who are going to Mars in 2024 didn't have such a good idea...]
