My cable was crossed over as well, I had trouble finding a plug that actually had six of the pins present all only had two or four actual pin contacts, in the end I just cut the cable and soldered them in the right order as per the pin outs available on the net.

You can get the plugs from Dick Smiths. They are RJ12 Modular Plugs - 6 Conductor.
I can get crimp tool sets like this for $50 or Dick Smiths sells a simple single crimp tool for $40.

Thanks - but as I am electronically challenged, I might buy a cable from Shoestring - or somewhere else if I can find them.

directly from shoestring you can be sure they will work... and they aren't overly expensive either..

I had the same problem with a modified controller I bought s/h for the eq5 before I fitted the Synscan. Had to rewire it mirror image of its original config to get it to work. Gave me the same error as yours Alex, but it took me a while to work it out. The Shoestring gear seems to be good, works straight out of the box and reasonably priced too.

OK - I know I am a wuzz compared to all you DIYs.

I went to Bintel today and picked up a new cable. As always, the guys were v helpful

I'll give it a whirl this evening

Did you make sure it was the same at both ends? I bought my mirror image cable from bintel..
